It lies on lean, well-drained, often sloping limestone soils, which promote slow and even ripening of the grapes. The ideal east and southeast exposure allows for maximum sunlight without excessive heat, ensuring a balance between tension, richness, and minerality.

The appellation includes many renowned Premier Cru vineyards such as Les Pucelles, Les Folatières, and Les Perrières, and four legendary Grand Cru vineyards shared or exclusive with Chassagne: Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. These terroirs produce some of the world's greatest dry white wines.

Puligny-Montrachet wines are distinguished by their pale color, their subtle and complex nose with notes of white flowers, citrus, flint, almond, and fresh butter.
