Domaine des Roches Neuves: Cabernet Franc and Chenin on Saumur tuffeau

Estate name

Domaine des Roches Neuves, Thierry and Marie Germain

Wine region

Loire Valley, Saumur area. The estate is based in Varrains, 5 km from Saumur.

Appellations and terroirs

The estate covers 28 hectares spread over 61 plots, across two appellations: Saumur-Champigny for the red wines and Saumur for the white wines. The bedrock of the terroir is tuffeau, a porous limestone that stores moisture and releases it in dry periods. On top of this base comes an alternation of chalky, sandy and clay soils, under the influence of the Loire and the Fontevraud forest, which together shape a microclimate specific to the area.

Signature grape varieties

The estate works with just two grape varieties: Cabernet Franc for the Saumur-Champigny reds and Chenin for the Saumur whites.

Philosophy and history

Founded in 1850 by the Duveau family, the estate was taken over in 1991 by Thierry Germain, who comes from a line of Bordeaux winegrowers, and his wife Marie. It was his attachment to the Saumur terroir that led him to settle in the Loire. Thierry Germain acknowledges the influence of Charly Foucault, of Clos Rougeard, on the way he approaches Cabernet Franc and Chenin. The vineyard, first planted with Cabernet Franc, was expanded in 1996 and again in 2012 with the plots of Clos de l'Échelier and Les Mémoires.

Production specifics

The division of the vineyard into many plots allows a plot-by-plot approach: each terroir is vinified separately before blending. Harvesting is done by hand and, according to the estate, rather early to preserve freshness and acidity, especially for the Chenins. Ageing favours large vessels (foudres and demi-muids), suited to the profile sought for each cuvée.

Environmental commitment

The estate converted to organic farming at the end of the 1990s, then moved into biodynamics in the early 2000s. It has been certified biodynamic by Biodyvin since 2005.
