Northern Rhône Valley, Crozes-Hermitage & Hermitage appellations
The estate extends around Pont-de-l'Isère and onto the foothills of Hermitage. The soils are particularly varied: rolled pebbles, sandstone, clayey sands, and siliceous-calcareous terraces. Each terroir offers a distinct expression: finesse, depth, or concentration. Among the vineyard sites, “Les Chênes Verts” offers an elegant structure, “Les Sept Chemins” aromatic power, while “La Guiraude” reveals a saline tension and great aging potential.
Founded in 1985 by Alain Graillot, the estate is now run by his sons, Antoine and Maxime, who maintain the balance between tradition and innovation. Trained under Jacques Seysses (Dujac, Burgundy), Alain brought with him Burgundian rigor: short pruning, hand-harvesting, very low yields, and an almost complete ban on chemical treatments. His sons work in the same spirit, focusing on vine care, adapting to the vagaries of the climate, and remaining true to the terroir.
The vines, aged 30 to 50 years, are cultivated using integrated or organic farming methods, with a focus on precision and sustainability. Grass cover between the rows protects the soil, promotes biodiversity, limits erosion, and enriches microbial life. Manual cultivation allows for greater adaptability to adverse weather conditions (frost, wind, hail), ensuring optimal ripeness before harvest. Yields are intentionally limited to maximize aromatic concentration: often around 30–35 hL/ha, well below the regional average.
The Syrah grapes are vinified with up to 50% whole clusters, depending on the cuvée, to enhance fruitiness and freshness. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled concrete vats, and the wines are then aged in Burgundy barrels (one to three years old, lightly toasted) to preserve the purity of the fruit without extracting any unwanted oak notes. The white wines (Marsanne/Roussanne) are gently pressed and then aged in demi-muids without malolactic fermentation to retain tension, salinity, and fresh aromatic expression.
The quality of the estate's wines is regularly praised by the international press: James Suckling, Decanter, and Wine Spectator, among others, have included La Guiraude in their World's Top 100 lists. Available in over 30 countries, the wines are sought after by wine merchants, sommeliers, and discerning wine lovers. Low yields, expressive fruit, and meticulous care in the vineyards ensure a consistency of quality rarely seen in estates of this size.
The estate is committed to sustainable viticulture: living soils, reduced inputs, enhanced biodiversity, and adaptation to climate change. Combating erosion and preserving soil microbial life are central. Natural ground cover and regular shading – rare in the region – promote the balance of the local ecosystem.
Manual labor, drastically limited treatments and the choice of small temperature-controlled equipment demonstrate a desire to produce authentic wines, respectful of the terroir and future generations.
Alain Graillot's wines consistently offer vibrant fruit, expressive freshness, silky tannins, and a subtle salinity. The classic Crozes-Hermitage delivers notes of crisp red berries, sweet spices, and a peppery finish. La Guiraude gains complexity after a few years, revealing aromas of blackberry, licorice, and graphite on an intense mineral base. The Hermitage Blanc presents a floral bouquet with citrus and flint notes, and a vibrant, crystalline palate.
Antoine and Maxime wish to strengthen the organic approach, explore natural fermentations, and continue experimenting in barrels, but without compromising the harmony of the style. They also aim to revisit certain historic cuvées with purer vinifications, always guided by the idea: “the terroir above all”.
Domaine Alain Graillot will hopefully remain a benchmark for northern Syrah – expressive, elegant and respectful of nature.
