Appellations and terroirs
Clos du Lucquier, located in the heart of the Jonquières-Montpeyroux-Aniane triangle, benefits from the diverse terroirs of the Languedoc region, encompassing the Languedoc, Montpeyroux, and Terrasses du Larzac appellations, as well as the Pays d'Hérault IGP. The vines extend across clay-limestone terraces shaped by frost and pebbles from Mont Baudile, at altitudes between 150 and 300 meters. The soils, a blend of fissured limestone and rounded pebbles, impart minerality, concentration, and freshness, further enhanced by a south to southwest exposure and minimal irrigation.
Iconic grape varieties
Reds: Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Cinsault. Whites: Grenache Blanc, Vermentino, Viognier, Roussanne.
Philosophy and History
A family estate for four generations, Le Clos du Lucquier is now run by Nicole and Claude Panis – along with their sons – who took over the property in 2001 and produced their first vintages in 2004. The Panis family cherishes a heritage passed down since Maurice, perpetuating tradition, respect for the terroir, and a commitment to quality. The name "Lucquier" refers to a tree emblematic of the vineyard, symbolizing both rootedness and uniqueness. The estate embodies a family identity, firmly established in the transmission of knowledge and a genuine passion for winemaking.
Production specifics
The 15-hectare vineyard has been managed using sustainable farming practices and has been certified HVE 3 since 2017. The white and rosé grapes are mechanically harvested at night to preserve freshness, followed by pressing under carbon dioxide and vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The red grapes are harvested by hand, with sorting, destemming using a pendulum, and a vibrating table. Vinification is carried out separately: traditional maceration or whole-cluster fermentation, depending on the cuvée. Daily pump-overs or carbonic and lactic maceration are performed according to the desired wine profiles. Aging lasts from 4 to 12 months in stainless steel tanks, barrels that have held 2 to 8 vintages, or new oak barrels, depending on the cuvée (Philippe, Louloups, Loustics, Loupiots).
Environmental commitment
The HVE 3 certification attests to environmentally friendly practices: mechanical soil cultivation, no herbicides, mating disruption techniques, water management without irrigation, controlled ground cover, hedgerows, and encouraged biodiversity. Every intervention in the vineyard and winery is optimized with the support of an agronomist to preserve the health of the grapes, the soil, and the workers.
Recognitions
The wines of Clos du Lucquier are praised by specialist guides (RVF, Hachette, Gault & Millau) and have won medals in regional and international competitions. Recent vintages (notably the Philippe, Louloups, and Loustics cuvées) are recognized for their typicity, Mediterranean freshness, and remarkable balance.
The estate produces expressive, balanced wines typical of the Languedoc region. The reds are fruit-rich and structured, while the whites and rosés combine delicacy and vivacity. Located in an authentic setting near St-Guilhem-le-Désert, the estate offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere in a bright tasting room.
