Pierre-Jean Villa: the soul of the Northern Rhône on granite

Estate name

Domaine Pierre-Jean Villa

Wine region

Northern Rhône Valley

Appellations and terroirs

The estate covers 20 hectares across the leading crus on both banks of the Northern Rhône: Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage and the slopes of Seyssuel, north of Vienne. The terroirs are mostly granitic (granite, gneiss and schists depending on the sector), on steep slopes worked by hand. It is on these slopes that Syrah and Viognier fully express their profile: mineral tension, expression of terroir, lasting freshness.

Signature grape varieties

Syrah (Côte-Rôtie, red Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Seyssuel), Viognier (Condrieu), Roussanne and Marsanne (white Saint-Joseph).

Philosophy and history

The son of winegrowers of French and Spanish origin, Pierre-Jean Villa gained his experience in Burgundy from 1992 at Mommessin and Clos de Tart, before taking part in the revival of the Seyssuel vineyard alongside Yves Cuilleron, Pierre Gaillard and François Villard within Vins de Vienne (2003-2009). In 2009, he founded his own estate in Chavanay, his childhood village, with 3 hectares. His founding conviction: “a great wine is born solely of respected land and fruit.”

The estate now covers 20 hectares and relies on new facilities in Chavanay (2022), designed to take plot-by-plot winemaking further and to refine the management of ageing. In 2022, Pierre-Jean was elected President of the Condrieu ODG. Hugo (winemaking) and Pauline (sales and vineyards) joined the estate in 2020 and 2022, carrying forward the handover and the move towards biodynamics.

Production specifics

Low-intervention winemaking: indigenous yeasts, and the lunar calendar followed for racking and bottling. Ageing lasts 12 to 24 months depending on the cuvée, in a carefully chosen range of vessels: large casks, barrels and stoneware jars. On some Seyssuel plots, Guyot-Poussard pruning is used to minimise pruning wounds and preserve the flow of sap.

Environmental commitment

Having turned to organic practices as early as 2011, the estate has been fully certified organic since 2021. No chemical inputs are used in the vineyard. Hugo and Pauline are now taking the estate towards biodynamics, a logical progression in line with the conviction that the quality of a wine begins with the life of the soil.

Recognition

Pierre-Jean Villa is rated 2 stars in the Guide RVF 2026 (“a great benchmark estate”). La Revue du Vin de France (no. 619, March 2018) noted that Pierre-Jean Villa had “revolutionised the style of Saint-Joseph” with fresh, delicious wines.
