Saint-Romain: freshness and purity in the Côte de Beaune

Perched at an altitude of over 300 meters, the Saint-Romain appellation is one of the highest in the Côte de Beaune. It produces red and white wines with natural freshness and a crystalline style. Less well-known than its prestigious neighbors, this AOC, recognized since 1947, is now prized for its authenticity, excellent value, and the finesse of its wines.

A vineyard high up on a limestone terroir

The Saint-Romain vineyard covers approximately 100 hectares (two-thirds white, one-third red) on well-exposed slopes overlooking the neighboring villages of Meursault and Auxey-Duresses. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone , rich in marl, and benefit from optimal sunshine thanks to their south and southeast exposure. The altitude imparts tension, freshness, and elegance to the wines.

The white wines , made from Chardonnay , reveal aromas of lemon, green apple, white flowers, and a pronounced minerality. On the palate, they are taut, precise, and beautifully long. The red wines , made from Pinot Noir , are characterized by a light ruby color, aromas of small red fruits, violet, and sometimes forest floor, with a supple and delicate palate.

Subtle and balanced food and wine pairings

A white Saint-Romain is perfect as an aperitif, with seafood, fish in sauce, grilled poultry, or fresh cheeses such as goat cheese or Saint-Marcellin. The reds, elegant and easy to drink, pair well with white meats, duck breast, mushroom quiche, or soft cheeses.

These wines can be enjoyed young for their vibrancy, or after a few years for greater complexity. Their freshness makes them ideal companions to delicate, seasonal cuisine.
