Northern Rhône Valley
Domaine Julien Pilon is present in several emblematic appellations of the Northern Rhône Valley: Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie, Cornas, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, and Saint-Péray. The vines grow in terroirs with strong identities: granite, schist, alluvial deposits, and rolled pebbles, each contributing tension, structure, or minerality. This diversity allows for the production of wines with a distinctive personality, deeply connected to their soils of origin.

Julien Pilon is an inspired, self-taught winemaker, deeply rooted in his native Rhône Valley. From a very young age, he participated in vineyard work and discovered wine during family meals and artisanal winemaking sessions at school. His admiration for the winemakers of the Northern Rhône led him to pursue a two-year vocational diploma in viticulture and oenology, alternating between classroom instruction and practical experience with Yves Cuilleron. He continued his training at Mas Amiel in Roussillon, then in Spain at Terra Remota, before working with Pierre Gaillard at Domaine de Madeloc. It was, in fact, Pascale Gaillard, his former primary school teacher, who introduced him to winemaking during his time in primary school by making wine from wild grapes with her students—a twist of fate.
After traveling the world with his wife Edmée and their daughter Anouk, Julien returned to the Northern Rhône and launched his business with the support of Pierre-Jean Villa. Lacking available vineyards, he founded a high-quality négociant house, vinifying his first vintage in 2010 in his parents' garage. The objective was clear: to express the concept of terroir with sincerity, without artifice, and with precision. In 2011, a winemaker from Condrieu rented him a cellar and facilitated access to several plots. The estate took shape, blending négociant wines with his own vineyards, and developed a close-knit team. In 2020, a modern winery was inaugurated, allowing for complete control over every stage of production.
Domaine Julien Pilon is based on a combination of owned vineyards and rigorously selected grapes. The harvest is done by hand, with the grapes picked at optimal ripeness and carefully sorted in the vineyard. Winemaking follows a logic of precision and respect for the natural processes: indigenous yeasts, minimal intervention, gentle extraction for the Syrah, long pressings for the white wines, and controlled cellar temperatures. Aging takes place in French oak barrels, with a moderate proportion of new oak (15 to 25% depending on the cuvée), for periods of 10 to 14 months. Particular attention is paid to the balance between fruit, terroir, and texture. The small size of the estate allows for individual attention to each cuvée, in a spirit of artisanal dedication and exacting standards.
From the very beginning, Julien Pilon has forged a solid reputation among professionals and discerning wine lovers. His wines are regularly praised in the Revue des Vins de France (scores of 92 to 94/100), in Bettane & Desseauve, Terre de Vins, the Hachette Wine Guide, and other specialized publications. His Condrieu wines are prized for their finesse, his Côte-Rôtie for their complexity, and his white Saint-Péray and Crozes-Hermitage for their crystalline freshness. Many sommeliers and wine merchants now seek out his wines for their precision and aromatic purity. This quiet yet undeniable success rests on the consistency of his artisanal work, vintage after vintage.
Halfway between family tradition and stylistic ambition, Domaine Julien Pilon embodies a new generation of Rhône winemakers: respectful of their origins, open to the world, and demanding in the expression of each vintage. Their wines reflect a vision: that of sincere, demanding, and free viticulture, serving magnificent terroirs.
