Château Le Puy
Bordeaux – Francs-Côtes-de-Bordeaux
Located atop the prestigious limestone plateau on the right bank of the Garonne River, Château Le Puy sits at an altitude of 107 meters, overlooking the Dordogne Valley. This unique terroir, the second highest geodetic point in the Gironde department, offers an exceptional setting for vines. The clay-limestone soils are rich in microbial life, and the vines coexist with groves, orchards, meadows, and forests in a meticulously structured agroforestry system. This holistic approach, blending flora and fauna, ensures a natural balance and remarkable resilience in the face of climatic challenges. Vines have been cultivated here since Roman times, and historic plots like "Les Rocs" still bear witness to the first vines planted by monks. This terroir lives in harmony with nature, guided by observation and family intuition.
Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec (reds) – Sémillon (white), reintroduced old grape varieties: Counoise, Grolleau, Chenanson, Castets, Len de l'El
Since 1610, fourteen generations of the Amoreau family have cultivated the same estate with an unwavering vision: to produce pure, vibrant wines in harmony with nature. Jean Amoreau rejected chemical products as early as 1924, and his legacy has inspired all subsequent generations. In 1964, Le Puy became one of the first estates to join Nature & Progrès. From 1990 onwards, Jean-Pierre and Pascal Amoreau developed sulfur-free winemaking, then introduced dynamization, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. In 1994, the "Barthélemy" cuvée was born, aged without sulfur or new oak, with a vibrant energy imparted by manual lees stirring according to the lunar calendar. In 2009, the 2003 Émilien cuvée was voted the best wine in the world in the manga "The Drops of God." This is a global consecration for a philosophy that has remained true to itself for four centuries.
The estate functions as an ecosystem: the soils are never plowed but lightly raked, and the spaces between the rows are naturally grassed or sown with blackcurrant and oleaster. Microbial life is encouraged by infusions of local plants (horsetail, nettle, alder buckthorn), prepared on-site. The harvest is done by hand, without leaf thinning or green harvesting. In the cellar, fermentations are carried out by infusion, without temperature control, using only indigenous yeasts. Aging takes place in old barrels or large casks for a minimum of two years, without added sulfur, filtration, or fining. Dynamization is a key step, performed by hand, to enhance the energy and natural stability of the wines. Each bottle is hand-waxed with pine resin and bears an authentication chip. The winery, which is not air-conditioned, intentionally allows the wines to live in harmony with the seasons, promoting their development and enhancing their ability to age gracefully.
Château Le Puy is unanimously praised as a model of rigor and integrity. It is certified by Ecocert and Demeter, and also holds organic certification from the Chinese government, a rare distinction for a French estate. The Émilien, Barthélemy, Marie-Cécile, and Marie-Élisa cuvées are all sought after for their finesse, balance, and remarkable aging potential. In 2017, a vertical tasting of 100 years' worth of vintages, including bottles from 1917, demonstrated the exceptional longevity of the estate's wines. The estate is regularly invited to the most prestigious international wine fairs, and its wines grace the tables of the finest restaurants worldwide. Le Puy is also one of the few estates to relabel and recork its older vintages to guarantee their integrity and aging potential.
Château Le Puy embodies an absolute vision of natural wine: far removed from fleeting trends, it is a patiently constructed family estate, consistent from vine to cellar, from soil to glass. More than just an estate, Le Puy is a model of respect, precision, and the passing down of knowledge.
