Recognized as an AOC since 1937, this appellation benefits from a beautiful diversity of terroirs and boasts numerous Premier Cru vineyards. Santenay is prized for its excellent value and its ability to combine the structure of southern Burgundy with the elegance of great Pinot Noir.
The Santenay vineyard covers approximately 330 hectares, with marl-limestone soils, moderate altitudes (250 to 400 m), and ideal south/southeast exposures. These conditions allow the grape varieties to fully express themselves. The Pinot Noir here produces deeply colored wines with aromas of black fruit, cherry, sweet spices, and forest floor. On the palate, they are structured yet supple, with well-integrated tannins and a good length.
Chardonnay , although less common, produces fresh and floral white wines with notes of green apple, lemon, and a touch of minerality. The result is a beautiful range of balanced wines, approachable in their youth but also capable of aging for several years.
Santenay reds pair perfectly with regional cuisine: roast poultry, grilled red meats, light game, pâtés, or Burgundian cheeses. Their smooth structure also makes them suitable for flavorful vegetarian dishes. The whites, on the other hand, enhance seafood, grilled or sauced fish, white meats, or cheeses such as Comté or aged goat cheese.
Premier Cru wines such as “Clos de Tavannes”, “Beauregard” or “La Comme” bring an extra depth and deserve a place of honor at the table or in the cellar.
At Les Vins de Carole, we select Santenay wines from estates deeply committed to their terroir, often practicing organic or sustainable agriculture. Our reds are chosen for their fruitiness, finesse, and aging potential. Our whites are distinguished by their freshness and elegance. Whether you're a lover of classic Burgundy or searching for hidden gems, Santenay will win you over with its authenticity and charm.
