Mas de Daumas Gassac – The Languedoc icon in the heart of a wild setting

Mas de Daumas Gassac

Wine region

Hérault – Languedoc

Appellations and terroirs

Located in the upper Gassac valley, between Aniane and the Arboussas massif, Mas de Daumas Gassac rests on a unique soil of glacial scree, rich in mineral oxides and poor in organic matter. This terroir, comparable to the greatest vineyards of Burgundy, benefits from a cool microclimate created by the winds of the Larzac plateau and a northern exposure. This singularity gives the wines exceptional freshness, complexity, and finesse.

Iconic grape varieties

Non-cloned Cabernet Sauvignon (majority), complemented by Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, Tannat, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Pinot Noir; Viognier, Chardonnay, Petit Manseng, Chenin, as well as a rare range of old grape varieties such as Fiano, Muscat Petit Grain or Marsanne.

Philosophy and History

It was in 1971 that Véronique and Aimé Guibert, passionate visionaries, discovered an old, abandoned farmhouse in Aniane. Encouraged by the geologist Henri Enjalbert, they founded the estate in 1972 with a bold ambition: to create a great wine in Languedoc. From the very first vintage in 1978, crafted with the guidance of Émile Peynaud, the estate's unique style was established. Today, their five sons carry on this legacy with a spirit of passing on knowledge, exacting standards, and respect for nature.

Production specifics

The estate cultivates its vines in clearings in the heart of a protected garrigue landscape, using traditional and ecological methods. Winemaking is slow and minimally interventionist. The red wine is aged for 12 to 15 months in Burgundy barrels, while the white wine, made from some twenty grape varieties, undergoes a more unconventional vinification process. The underground cellar, housed in a former Gallo-Roman mill, guarantees ideal temperature conditions for fermentation and aging.

Recognitions

As early as 1982, Gault & Millau magazine compared Mas de Daumas Gassac to a "Château Lafite of the Languedoc." Robert Parker, La Revue du Vin de France, Le Figaro, and The Times have all hailed its red and white vintages as absolute benchmarks. The estate's wines are now distributed in over 60 countries and are featured in the world's finest cellars.

Over the decades, Mas de Daumas Gassac has become a symbol of excellence and independence, demonstrating that a great wine can be born far from prestigious appellations, in a wild setting, with non-cloned grape varieties and a deep respect for life.
