Mâconnais, Burgundy

Appellations and terroirs

The 22 hectares of Domaine Le Virolys flourish within two major appellations: Viré-Clessé and Mâcon-Villages. Located on well-exposed slopes around Viré and Clessé, the vines grow in limestone soils mixed with clay, providing ideal conditions for the Chardonnay grape to thrive. This terroir, typical of the Mâconnais region, imparts freshness, minerality, and depth to the wines.

Philosophy and History

Coming from a long line of cooperative winegrowers, Laurent Gondard represents the third generation to cultivate vines at the "Le Virolys" vineyard in the village of Viré. In 2008, drawing on 22 years of experience at the Viré cooperative winery, he decided to establish his own estate. The estate is structured around strong values: respect for heritage, nature, and family expertise. A visual tribute to these roots can be found on each label, adorned with a stained-glass window of Cluny Abbey, a reference to a 12th-century Cluny coin.

Production specifics

The winemaking practices are rooted in respect for the environment: soil cultivation without herbicides, hand-harvesting on certain plots, and rigorous grape selection. In the cellar, fermentations are carried out with indigenous yeasts to preserve the expression of the terroir. The wines are then aged on fine lees for 8 to 12 months, giving each vintage complexity, roundness, and a beautiful length on the palate. Vinification is adapted to each plot to preserve the identity of each terroir.

Recognitions

Domaine Le Virolys is gradually gaining renown in the Burgundy wine scene thanks to its Viré-Clessé and Mâcon-Villages wines, praised for their purity and precision. Several vintages have garnered attention at regional wine fairs and from sommeliers who appreciate the distinctive character of the Mâconnais region.

With its roots deeply embedded in local history and a modern vision of Burgundian viticulture, Domaine Le Virolys embodies a sincere and demanding approach to Chardonnay, at the crossroads of heritage and mineral expression.
