Champagne Delamotte: Côte des Blancs Chardonnay since 1760

Name of the house

Champagne Delamotte is a family house founded in Reims and now based in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, in the heart of the Côte des Blancs.

Wine region

AOC Champagne, Côte des Blancs. The house sources its grapes from the Grand Cru Chardonnay villages (Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize, Oger, Cramant) and from the Pinot Noir Grands Crus of the Montagne de Reims (Bouzy, Ambonnay, Tours-sur-Marne).

Appellations and terroirs

The Delamotte vineyard rests on the pure chalk characteristic of the Côte des Blancs, where the roots can reach down 10-15 metres. Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, a village classified 100% Grand Cru, is the historic heart of its Chardonnay supply.

Signature grape varieties

  • Chardonnay: the main grape of the house and the only one in the Blanc de Blancs
  • Pinot Noir: from the Grands Crus of the Montagne de Reims
  • Pinot Meunier: used only in the Brut blend

Philosophy and history

Founded in 1760 in Reims by François Delamotte, a vineyard owner, the house is one of the five oldest in Champagne. Taken over in 1927 in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger by Marie-Louise de Nonancourt, it was brought into the Laurent-Perrier group in 1988 by Bernard de Nonancourt, alongside Salon, whose sister house it became. Didier Depond has run both houses since 1997.

Production details

Vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks, with no use of oak, to preserve the purity of the fruit. Ageing on the lees goes well beyond the legal minimum of 15 months: 30 to 36 months for the Brut, and 4 to 5 years for the Blanc de Blancs before disgorgement. The Rosé, a blend of 88% Chardonnay and 12% Pinot Noir vinified as a red wine, is not a saignée rosé.

Environmental commitment

No specific environmental certification (HVE, Viticulture Durable en Champagne, organic) has been publicly documented for the house to date. Its secondary packaging contains at least 87% recycled material and is mostly recyclable, in accordance with Decree No. 2022-748 of 29 April 2022 on environmental product information (AGEC law).

Recognition

  • La Revue du Vin de France: Top 10 of the best Bruts (2021) and Coup de Cœur for the Blanc de Blancs (2020, 2021)
  • Guide Hachette des Vins: one star for the Blanc de Blancs (2026 edition)
  • Guide Bettane+Desseauve: Brut selected (2020, 2023)
  • Champagne Masters (The Drinks Business): Master award for the Blanc de Blancs (2023 and 2026), Gold for the Brut (2026)
