Domaine Mathias – Biodynamic tradition and mineral expression of the Mâconnais

Appellations and terroirs

Domaine Mathias spans 12 hectares in Chaintré, in the heart of the southern Mâconnais region, and encompasses iconic appellations such as Pouilly-Fuissé, Pouilly-Vinzelles, Mâcon-Chaintré, and other names derived from local micro-terroirs. The vines are rooted in deep clay-limestone soils, typical of the region, with numerous veins of blue limestone, which contribute minerality and tension. The southeast-facing slope ensures balanced ripening, while the moderate altitude helps preserve freshness and aromatic vibrancy in the wines.

Philosophy and History

The story of Domaine Mathias began in 1894 with Antoine Charvet, a winemaker and carpenter in Chaintré, who was awarded a prize for his white wine. Later, his daughter Marie-Madeleine and her husband Claude Mathias continued the family business. In 1958, their sons Jean and Claudius sold the first bottles, launching the estate's reputation. In 1992, Gilles Mathias, assisted by Béatrice Prost, expanded the vineyard, which reached 12 hectares in 2019. Supported by Thibault Mathias, the fifth generation, the estate distinguished itself in 2010 by converting to organic farming, a process formalized by certification. Since then, their approach has favored biodynamic practices, which were incorporated into their farming practices in 2010. Their legacy is that of a family of winemakers committed to the authentic expression of their terroir.

Production specifics

Viticulture is practiced according to strict organic principles: living soils, encouraged biodiversity, and natural organic fertilization – without chemicals. Thibault works in partnership with the vines through biodynamic preparations (composts, decoctions, herbal teas), applied in harmony with the lunar phases and the plant's needs. The harvest is done by hand, ensuring rigorous selection of the bunches and preserving the balance of the grapes, especially those from the old vines.

In the cellar, winemaking is based on respecting the raw materials. Fermentation begins with the grapes' natural yeasts, without any external additives, and the juices are slowly extracted to preserve their aromatic finesse. Aging on the lees for extended periods (8 to 12 months) in stainless steel tanks and barrels, sometimes in older oak, imparts complexity, roundness, and tension to the wines without artificiality. Oenological monitoring is precise, with regular tastings, topping up, and controlled adjustment of sulfites to preserve the wines' purity.

The iconic vintages

Pouilly-Fuissé : flagship cuvée of expressive breadth, revealing floral aromas, white minerals and hints of hazelnut, elegant and structured.
Pouilly-Vinzelles : fresher, livelier, with a saline tension, perfect as an accompaniment to fish and shellfish.
Mâcon-Chaintré : accessible, fruity, young pear shoots and green apple, ideal as a starter.
Outside the appellation : small batches from specific plots, vinified in an artisanal and respectful way, for a freer expression of the terroir.
