Alsace wines: a mosaic of exceptional terroirs and grape varieties

Located between the Vosges Mountains and the Rhine River, Alsace is one of France's most unique and prestigious wine regions. Renowned for its aromatic white wines, Alsace also boasts a rich, thousand-year-old winemaking history, a diversity of grape varieties, and time-honored winemaking expertise. From dry to sweet, still to sparkling, Alsatian wines captivate with their finesse, purity, and ability to express the nuances of their terroir.

A vineyard at the crossroads of influences

The Alsatian vineyards stretch across more than 15,000 hectares along a narrow 170-km strip from Wissembourg to Thann. Sheltered by the Vosges Mountains, they benefit from one of the driest climates in France, ideal for viticulture. The soils are extremely varied – granitic, limestone, schist, and clay – creating a mosaic of terroirs that gives rise to highly distinctive wines. The region's winemaking history dates back to Roman times, and its Franco-German identity has contributed to shaping unique styles, combining precision, freshness, and elegance.

Noble grape varieties and a range of styles

Alsace is distinguished by its use of grape varieties, clearly indicated on the labels. Among them are the four "noble grapes": Riesling , Gewurztraminer , Pinot Gris , and Muscat , used particularly for Grand Cru wines . Alongside these, Pinot Blanc , Sylvaner , and Chasselas complete the range of white wines. Pinot Noir , experiencing strong growth, now produces increasingly high-quality red and rosé wines. Finally, the sparkling Crémant d'Alsace , made using the traditional method, offers an excellent alternative to Champagne.

Wine styles and food pairings

Alsatian wines can be dry, off-dry, or sweet (particularly Vendanges Tardives and Sélections de Grains Nobles ), depending on the ripeness of the grapes. They are renowned for their aromatic intensity, structure, and balance. These wines pair wonderfully with regional cuisine (sauerkraut, baeckeoffe, Munster cheese), as well as with exotic cuisines, vegetarian dishes, aged cheeses, and even fruity desserts in their sweeter form. Crémant, meanwhile, is ideal as an aperitif or to accompany an entire meal.

Our selection of Alsatian wines

Les Vins de Carole offers a selection representative of Alsace's incredible diversity: crisp and mineral Rieslings, opulent and floral Gewurztraminers, gastronomic Pinot Gris, expressive Muscats, elegant Pinot Noirs, and festive Crémants. These wines come from passionate winemakers, often practicing organic or biodynamic farming, allowing you to discover the full richness and personality of Alsatian wines.
