Domaine Sérol: Gamay Saint-Romain on its high-altitude granite terroirs

Domaine Sérol

A 38-hectare family estate farmed biodynamically by Carine and Stéphane Sérol, on the granite slopes of the Côte Roannaise. A long-standing specialist in Gamay Saint-Romain, the appellation's indigenous grape variety, the estate produces a range of single-plot reds and a few whites under IGP d'Urfé.

Wine region

Côte Roannaise, Loire Volcanique, Massif Central.

Appellations and terroirs

The Côte Roannaise AOP, recognised in 1994, covers 200 hectares on the granite slopes of the Monts de la Madeleine, the eastern foothills of the Massif Central, at an altitude of 400 to 530 m, close to the Gorges de la Loire. The climate is semi-continental, dry and windy. Domaine Sérol farms 38 ha of vines there (5 to 80 years old) on sandy soils over granite, at an altitude of 400 to 550 m. The white cuvées (Viognier, Chenin) come under IGP d'Urfé.

Signature grape varieties

  • Gamay Saint-Romain: the indigenous grape of the Côte Roannaise, a red Gamay with white juice and small berries rich in phenolic compounds, giving spicy wines with moderate alcohol levels.
  • Viognier: planted on granite, vinified in barrels, classified IGP d'Urfé.
  • Chenin: on a granite plot, classified IGP d'Urfé (according to the estate).

Philosophy and history

Domaine Sérol has been handed down within the family for five generations. Stéphane took over the estate in 1996: he cleared and replanted the best slopes, deliberately choosing to focus the estate on Gamay Saint-Romain, the historic grape of the Côte Roannaise AOP. Together with Carine, he gradually converted the vineyard to organic farming, then to biodynamics. In 2022, a parallel project was launched, Sérol Champs Libres, to vinify organic grapes selected from outside the estate. The estate also co-owns a 1.89 ha plot with the Troisgros family, the source of the Les Blondins cuvée.

Production specifics

High-density planting (8,000 to 10,000 vines/ha). Harvesting entirely by hand (70 people involved), in small crates, with systematic sorting on a vibrating table and vats filled by gravity. Fermentations use indigenous yeasts exclusively, with minimal inputs. The reds are aged in concrete vats, wooden vats or amphorae depending on the plot; the whites are vinified in barrels. Depending on the cuvée, the bunches are kept partly or entirely whole for vinification.

Environmental commitment

All the plots are certified organic (Agriculture Biologique) by Ecocert and biodynamic under the Biodyvin label (certification obtained in 2017). The soil is worked mechanically. The vineyard's biodiversity is inherited from the local history of mixed farming. The stated aim: to stimulate living organisms in order to preserve the soils and respect their natural cycles.

Why choose a wine from Domaine Sérol?

  • 38 ha on high-altitude granite terroirs (400-550 m) in the Côte Roannaise AOP, farmed entirely biodynamically (Biodyvin certified since 2017).
  • Gamay Saint-Romain in single-plot selections: old vines up to 80 years old, hand harvesting, indigenous yeasts only.
  • A range of whites (Viognier, Chenin) on granite under IGP d'Urfé, off the Loire's beaten track.
  • Co-owner, with the Troisgros family, of a 1.89 ha plot: the Les Blondins cuvée.
  • A family rooted in the same appellation for five generations: continuity of terroir, no marketing repositioning.

Explore the Sérol selection: reds from Gamay Saint-Romain on high-altitude granite and rare whites under IGP d'Urfé, all from certified biodynamic viticulture.
