Domaine Stéphane Ogier – The art of Syrah and the terroirs of the Rhône Valley
Domain name
Domaine Stéphane Ogier
Wine region
Rhône Valley – Côte-Rôtie, Saint-Joseph, Condrieu
Appellations and terroirs
Domaine Stéphane Ogier spans several prestigious appellations in the Northern Rhône Valley, including Côte-Rôtie , Saint-Joseph , and Condrieu . Of the estate's 45 hectares, 36 are planted with Syrah for red wines (primarily in Côte-Rôtie and Saint-Joseph), and 9 are planted with white grape varieties (Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne), mainly in Condrieu and Saint-Joseph. The estate benefits from magnificent schist and granite terroirs, which impart great finesse and complexity to the wines. The 3.5 hectares of vines in Côte-Rôtie, particularly prized, are cultivated with meticulous care, resulting in wines of exceptional quality.
Iconic grape varieties
Syrah (mainly for Côte-Rôtie and Saint-Joseph), Viognier (mostly for Condrieu wines), Roussanne and Marsanne (used especially in Condrieu and Saint-Joseph wines)
Philosophy and History
The Ogier family has been established in the Côte-Rôtie appellation for over six generations. Initially, the estate focused on mixed farming, primarily cultivating vines and apricot trees, with grapes mainly sold to négociants. It was Michel Ogier who, in 1983, marketed the estate's first wines, at a time when the Côte-Rôtie appellation was experiencing a real boom. He quickly ceased sales to négociants and began making his own wines. His son, Stéphane Ogier, joined the estate in 1997, after studying oenology in Beaune. Together, they transformed the estate, expanding their vineyard to its current 45 hectares and refining their winemaking approach. Stéphane Ogier favors single-vineyard vinification and a constant pursuit of finesse and elegance in his wines.
Production specifics
The harvest is entirely manual, allowing for the selection of only the finest grapes. The estate favors vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with a variable proportion of whole clusters, depending on the cuvée. Aging takes place in French oak barrels, with a moderate proportion of new oak to preserve the purity of the aromas. The wines are produced from single plots, with very precise cuvées, such as La Belle Hélène (Côte-Rôtie) and Les Vieilles Vignes de Jacques Vernay (Côte-Rôtie), which perfectly illustrate the specific terroir of Ampuis and the constant pursuit of quality.
Recognitions
Domaine Stéphane Ogier is consistently praised by international critics. Wines like La Belle Hélène have received exceptional scores, such as 97/100 from Wine Spectator. The estate is also featured in prestigious guides, particularly recognized for the finesse, structure, and aging potential of its wines. The estate is considered among the elite producers of Côte-Rôtie and other appellations in the Rhône Valley.
Stéphane Ogier has thus established himself as an essential reference in the world of wine, offering wines that combine tradition and innovation, with great precision and remarkable balance.
