Marne Valley
The Champagne Maurice Grumier vineyard spans 9 hectares across 7 crus on both banks of the Marne River, notably in Venteuil, Damery, Reuil, Festigny, and Dormans. The soils are varied: chalky, clay, and sandy, depending on the plot, offering a remarkable richness of expression. The south and east-facing slopes promote ideal grape ripeness and a nuanced expression of the Marne terroir.
Pinot Meunier (60%), Chardonnay (30%), Pinot Noir (10%)
Since 1743, the Grumier family has embodied a passion for winemaking in the heart of the Marne Valley. Champagne Maurice Grumier truly came into being in 1928 under the impetus of Amand Grumier. After the war, his son Maurice structured the estate and gave it his name. Guy, a visionary heir, modernized the operation, planted the first white grape varieties, developed the equipment, and expanded the vineyard to 6 hectares.
In the 2000s, Fabien Grumier and his wife Hélène took over the family business. Deeply attached to his land, he steered the estate towards sustainable viticulture and highly precise winemaking. He represents the 12th generation of a family deeply rooted in its terroir, combining respect for tradition with a quest for innovation. The estate has been certified High Environmental Value (HVE) since 2014.
Every step of the process is designed to enhance the terroir. The grapes are harvested by hand, then gently pressed by gravity in a three-level press. Each grape variety and each plot is vinified separately. The winery combines temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, large oak casks, amphorae, and concrete eggs, allowing for a wide range of aging techniques and remarkable aromatic precision.
Fermentation is often carried out without malolactic fermentation to preserve the tension and freshness of the wines. Aging takes place on the lees for 6 to 18 months, after which the bottles mature in the cellar for at least 4 years, or even 7 years for vintage wines. The house has used a Solera system since 2005 to enrich its reserve wines, enhancing their depth and complexity. Disgorgement is followed by measured dosage, often resulting in extra-brut or brut nature.
The vineyard is managed according to the principles of sustainable viticulture: natural ground cover, soil cultivation, judicious treatments, and zero effluent discharge. Interventions are minimal, dictated by observation and attentiveness to the vine's needs. The use of inputs is significantly reduced. This constant care preserves soil life and produces healthy, ripe, and expressive grapes.
Fabien champions a holistic, eco-responsible approach, prioritizing the balance of soil, climate, and vegetation. He uses organic compost, gentle pruning techniques, and tailors each intervention to the unique characteristics of each plot. This demanding approach makes the estate one of the most environmentally conscious in Champagne.
Grumier wines have won over critics and sommeliers alike with their purity, tension, and mineral character. La Revue du Vin de France, Gault & Millau, and Michelin-starred restaurants regularly praise their aromatic finesse and gastronomic potential. Detailed back labels provide information on the blend, vintage, aging process, dosage, and even the disgorgement date.
The house champions a philosophy of patience, where each wine is given the time to fully develop. The 250,000 bottles in stock mature slowly in the silence of the cellars, some still being ridden by hand by Guy, who remains actively involved. A tradition, a rigor, and an attention to detail passed down with passion.
