Domaine Jean-Pierre et Vincent Charton – Mercurey: between tradition, finesse and precision

Domain name

Jean-Pierre and Vincent Charton Estate

Wine region

Côte Chalonnaise

Appellations and terroirs

Located in the heart of the prestigious village of Mercurey, Domaine Charton cultivates 11.5 hectares on renowned terroirs of the Côte Chalonnaise. The marl-limestone soils impart remarkable structure and aromatic intensity to the wines. The village boasts 32 Premier Cru vineyards, including Clos du Roy, La Chassière, and Les Naugues, which are among the finest expressions of Burgundy's Pinot Noir. The reds from these parcels are expressive, taut, and balanced, while the whites reveal a beautiful mineral freshness, typical of Mercurey's best terroirs.

Emblematic grape varieties

Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Aligoté

Philosophy and History

Since 1941, the Charton family has passed down its passion for vines and wine from generation to generation. Jean-Pierre Charton successfully developed the family estate before handing the reins to his son Vincent, who now manages it. Together, they share a common vision: to produce authentic wines that faithfully reflect the terroir and the vintage. Their work is based on a deep respect for the soil, careful observation of nature, and meticulous precision at every stage of the growing cycle.

Production specifics

The estate adopts a demanding yet respectful approach to viticulture: regular tilling (up to seven times a year), preservation of biodiversity, and short pruning (five to six buds per vine) to encourage concentration in the grapes. The harvest is done by hand, in small crates, with meticulous sorting upon arrival at the winery. The reds are vinified from destemmed grapes, with moderate punch-downs and pump-overs to preserve the finesse of the Pinot Noir. The whites are pressed as whole bunches and then vinified in oak barrels. All the wines are aged for eight to ten months, with approximately 30% new oak. The estate works closely with a local cooperage to perfectly match the wood to the structure of each wine.

Recognitions

The estate is renowned for the consistency and precision of its wines. The Premier Cru cuvées, such as "Clos du Roy" and "Les Naugues," are sought after for their aging potential and complexity. Connoisseurs praise the purity of the fruit expressions, the perfect balance, and the natural elegance of the wines. Minimal intervention winemaking and meticulous attention to each plot reinforce the estate's reputation among the best in Mercurey.

The range includes both regional appellations – such as the Bourgogne Pinot Noir “Champ de Perdrix” or the Chardonnay “Les Chaumes” – and more exclusive vineyard sites, vinified separately to highlight their unique character. The “Bourgogne Fleur de Pinot – En Joli Bois,” in particular, reveals all the grape variety's delicate qualities in a refined and ethereal style. The estate also produces a Bourgogne Aligoté from old vines, which is lively, precise, and aromatic.

Each wine from Domaine Charton reflects unwavering dedication, a strong commitment to winemaking precision, and a family passion for the great wines of Burgundy. Blending tradition and dynamism, the Charton signature is establishing itself as a rising star in the Côte Chalonnaise.
