Domaine Jean Paul Brun – The master of the Golden Lands, between tradition and renewal

Domain name

Domaine Jean Paul Brun

Wine region

Beaujolais – Golden Lands

Appellations and terroirs

From the sun-drenched land of the Golden Stones, Domaine Jean Paul Brun spans 57 hectares spread across the Beaujolais and Beaujolais Villages appellations, as well as several renowned crus in southern Beaujolais, such as Morgon, Fleurie, Moulin-à-Vent, Côte-de-Brouilly, and La Rochelle. These granitic and schistous terroirs impart a strong identity to each vintage, characterized by beautiful aromatic expression, a balanced structure, and excellent drinkability—the winemaker's signature.

Iconic grape varieties

Gamay noir à jus blanc (95%), Pinot Noir (5%), Chardonnay (90%), Roussanne (10%)

Philosophy and History

Jean-Paul Brun, a pioneer of the Beaujolais revival, has dedicated decades to revealing the richness and diversity of the terroirs of southern Beaujolais. His approach blends respect for Burgundian traditions, such as destemmed grapes, with innovation, notably embodied by his recent collaboration with Tristan Larsen. His vision is clear: to produce wines that are both accessible and of high quality, capable of satisfying the discerning wine lover while respecting the fundamental character of Gamay and Chardonnay.

Production specifics

The vineyard covers 57 hectares, 48 of which are dedicated to reds and 9 to whites. The harvest is entirely manual, ensuring rigorous sorting of the grapes. The average age of the vines is around 40 years, guaranteeing excellent aromatic concentration. The estate also supplements its production by purchasing grapes selected for their quality. Winemaking is characterized by destemmed grapes, long and controlled fermentation, and aging tailored to each cuvée, often in stainless steel tanks or oak barrels for the whites.

Wine range

The range is distinguished by its diversity and balance. The Beaujolais Blanc "Classic" is characterized by a crisp style and early ripeness, ideal for freshness. The "Fût de Chêne" seduces with its flattering oak notes. Among the reds, the "Beaujolais L'Ancien" remains a benchmark, although less prominent in recent years. The Morgon offers a tangy profile, while the Côte-de-Brouilly displays toasty aromas and a slight reduction. The Fleurie oscillates between overripe aromas and menthol notes, and the Moulin-à-Vent reveals spices and a beautiful complexity. The "La Rochelle" cuvée still needs aging but promises depth and austerity, while "Les Thorins" illustrates the contrast between vegetal character and elegance.

Recognitions

Domaine Jean Paul Brun enjoys a solid reputation among critics and wine lovers. Its wines are praised for their consistency, their faithful expression of the terroir, and their refined texture. Guides and specialized magazines regularly highlight its wines, confirming its key role in the qualitative renewal of Beaujolais.

With nearly 400,000 bottles produced each year, Jean-Paul Brun combines authentic know-how with rigorous technical mastery to offer expressive and high-quality wines, capable of appealing to a wide audience, from the novice to the connoisseur.
