Alsace – Ribeauvillé & surrounding area
Today, Maison Trimbach cultivates 58 hectares of vines, spread across more than 50 parcels around Ribeauvillé, Bergheim, Hunawihr, and Zellenberg. The terroirs are highly diverse but dominated by limestone and marl-limestone soils, giving the wines great tension and a pronounced minerality. Some parcels also rest on sandstone formations and granite terroirs. The estate also works with emblematic vineyard sites such as Rosacker (home of Clos Sainte Hune), Geisberg, Mandelberg, Osterberg, and Kientzheim, some of which are classified as Grand Cru.
The great Alsatian grape varieties are showcased at Maison Trimbach. Riesling, the estate's emblem, embodies tension, precision, and aging potential. Pinot Gris develops notes of yellow fruit, smoke, and sometimes truffle. Gewurztraminer, with its dry, elegant, and slightly spicy style, expresses the terroir in a taut, gastronomic form. Pinot Blanc, Muscat, Sylvaner, and Pinot Noir complete the range of wines, with a particular emphasis on dry whites.
The Trimbach family has been established since 1626. Jean Trimbach, originally from Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, was granted citizenship in Riquewihr, where he founded the winery. In 1840, Frédéric Emile Trimbach revitalized the estate by relocating the headquarters to Hunawihr and raising the quality of the wines to an international standard. In 1920, the winery permanently settled in Ribeauvillé. Since then, twelve generations have succeeded one another, and the 13th is represented by Anne Trimbach, alongside her uncle Hubert and her cousins Pierre and Jean. The spirit of rigor, discretion, and excellence continues.
Vineyard work is based on sustainable viticulture: controlled yields, natural ground cover, no herbicides, and a largely manual harvest. The grapes are pressed slowly, without re-pressing, to preserve the integrity of the fruit. The juice is vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, without malolactic fermentation, in order to retain natural acidity and aromatic purity. Certain prestige cuvées, such as the Pinot Gris Réserve Personnelle or the Gewurztraminer “Cuvée des Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre,” benefit from extended aging on fine lees. The Clos Sainte Hune, the jewel of the estate, rests for more than five years before being released.
• Clos Sainte Hune : a superb dry Riesling from a single hectare of vines in the Grand Cru Rosacker. Sharp minerality, salinity, and exceptional aging potential (30 to 50 years). • Riesling Frédéric Emile : a blend from two exceptional terroirs (Osterberg and Geisberg), very dry, complex, ideal for fine dining. • Pinot Gris Réserve Personnelle : rich, structured, with truffle notes, often with a touch of residual sugar. • Gewurztraminer Cuvée des Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre : dry, elegant, and spicy, an emblematic wine of the house's dry style. • Muscat Réserve or Pinot Blanc : fresh, fruity, and approachable.
Maison Trimbach has practiced sustainable viticulture for many years. Phytosanitary treatments are minimized, the soil is naturally grassed, and erosion is controlled. No herbicides are used. The majority of the plots are harvested by hand, in several passes. The estate is not certified organic, but it is committed to a sustainable and pragmatic approach, prioritizing the health of the soil and vines, and winemaking precision.
Trimbach is regularly praised by international critics. Clos Sainte Hune is ranked among the world's best Rieslings by Wine Spectator, Jancis Robinson, and James Suckling. La Revue des Vins de France awarded the winery three stars, calling it an "Alsace must-try." Their wines are featured in the cellars of the finest restaurants and are widely exported (to over 60 countries).
Trimbach wines embody a rigorous, precise, and uncomplicated Alsace, dedicated to the terroir. The purity of the wines and their mineral freshness define a unique style, acclaimed by both wine lovers and discerning sommeliers.
