Philosophy and History
Domaine Tariquet has been rooted in the Gers region since 1912, when Pierre Artaud, originally from Ercé, and his son Jean-Pierre, a bartender in New York, acquired the property. The Grassa family, direct descendants, have managed it since 1946. Guided by a strong family vision, the estate has spanned the decades with a constant commitment to excellence, combining modernity and tradition. Today, Tariquet is an emblem of Gascony winemaking, renowned for its aromatic white wines and exceptional Bas-Armagnacs.
Production specifics
The grapes are vinified in state-of-the-art facilities, where each step is designed to preserve the fruit's expression. Gentle pressing, carried out in temperature-controlled pneumatic presses, is followed by aging on fine lees. The slow, controlled alcoholic fermentation takes place at low temperatures to guarantee aromatic finesse. The estate does not carry out malolactic fermentation in order to retain freshness and tension. A portion of the wines is aged in lightly toasted oak barrels, without excessive oak influence, to add structure and complexity to the most ambitious cuvées.
Viticultural practices and biodiversity
The estate has practiced regenerative viticulture since the 1990s. Cover cropping every other row, the use of organic compost, the avoidance of mineral fertilizers, and mating disruption to control pests demonstrate a deep respect for the ecosystem. The soil is worked without tilling in order to preserve the layers of microbial life essential to the health of the vines.
Domaine Tariquet maintains over 400 hectares of natural areas (hedges, forests, wetlands) alongside its 1,125 hectares of vineyards. This ecological richness is protected through a partnership with the Conservatoire des Espaces Naturels d'Occitanie (Occitanie Regional Nature Reserve), within the framework of the Life Biodiv'Paysanne project. Around twenty beehives are also located within the vineyard, serving as valuable indicators of environmental health.
Planting and vineyard management
Each replanting is preceded by a long rest period for the soil (at least 3 years), with flowering fallow periods promoting organic regeneration. The estate practices massal selection, particularly for old Gascon grape varieties such as Folle Blanche. The planting density is 4,500 vines/ha compared to the usual 3,300, reflecting a focus on quality to obtain more concentrated and expressive grapes.
Wines from Domaine Tariquet
Specializing in white wines, Tariquet offers a wide range of cuvées, from the ultra-fruity Classic to the refined Dernières Grives, including the Chardonnay Tête de Cuvée. All wines are vinified and aged on the estate, with meticulous attention to every step: skin contact maceration, temperature control, aging on fine lees, gentle clarification, and bottling in a controlled atmosphere. Alcoholic fermentation is extended to enrich the texture and develop intense aromas, without resorting to malolactic fermentation in order to preserve natural freshness.
