Côtes du Rhône: one appellation, a thousand expressions

The Côtes du Rhône appellation extends over more than 170 communes, from Vienne to the gates of Avignon, crossing six departments and an incredible diversity of terroirs. Rhône alluvium, rounded pebbles, clay-limestone, granite slopes: each soil brings its own signature. It is this geological complexity, combined with exceptional sunshine and the Mistral wind that keeps the vines healthy, that makes Côtes du Rhône an appellation capable of producing both wines for immediate pleasure and cuvées that hold their own at the table.

The grape varieties: the quintessential Mediterranean blend

The reds rest on the Rhône trinity: Grenache for fruit and roundness, Syrah for structure and spice, Mourvèdre for depth and ageing potential. Together they produce warm wines scented with garrigue, black cherry and olive, with a characteristic spicy finish. The whites, rarer but often remarkable, rely on Viognier, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne: floral, generous aromatic profiles, ideal with fish in sauce or roast poultry.

Our selection: the Rhône's benchmark houses

At Les Vins de Carole, we have chosen to work with the names that have shaped the history of this appellation. Guigal, the house that built the reputation of the Rhône, offers a red cuvée of exemplary consistency vintage after vintage, as well as a magnum that is ideal for large gatherings. Famille Perrin, owner of Château de Beaucastel in Châteauneuf, produces several expressions of the appellation, including an organic cuvée called Nature. Chapoutier makes a red and a white Belleruche that are wonderfully approachable. Delas Frères completes the selection with its Saint-Esprit, one of the most consistent cuvées in the appellation.

For those who favour organic farming, the selection also includes cuvées from Domaine de la Mordorée and Domaine Soleyrade: two committed producers who prove that organic Côtes du Rhône can reach a very high level of expression.

Pairings and serving

The reds come into their own with grilled meats, meats in sauce, Provençal cooking and full-flavoured cheeses. Serve them at a cool room temperature, between 16 and 17 °C, and avoid serving them too warm, which would bring out the alcohol at the expense of the fruit. The whites, served between 10 and 12 °C, go wonderfully with fish in sauce, poultry and risottos. The rosés are served between 8 and 10 °C, ideal as an aperitif or with summer cooking.
