Saint-Péray: the little-known brilliance of Northern Rhône whites

Located at the far southern tip of the Northern Rhône, opposite Valence, the Saint-Péray appellation is a true hidden treasure. Recognised as an AOC since 1936, it is unique in the region because it produces only white wines, in either still or sparkling form. This discreet appellation appeals to wine lovers in search of originality, freshness and finesse.

A white-wine terroir at the heart of the granite Rhône

The Saint-Péray vineyard covers around a hundred hectares, on granite soils mixed with limestone and clay, perfectly suited to expressing the Marsanne and Roussanne grape varieties. The climate, influenced by the Rhône Valley and the hills of the Ardèche, combines generous sunshine with cool nights, making it possible to produce wines that are ample, elegant and vibrant all at once.

Still wines now account for the majority of production. They stand out for their golden colour, an expressive nose mingling white-fleshed fruit, flowers and honey, and a round, fresh and mineral palate. The sparkling wines, made using the traditional method, offer a refined alternative to crémants, with fine bubbles and lovely aromatic complexity.

Refined whites for elegant pairings

A still Saint-Péray is perfect as an aperitif or at the table: with seafood, a fine fish (sea bass, turbot), shellfish, poultry in a cream sauce or a mild cheese such as Saint-Marcellin. The sparkling cuvées are wonderful with festive food: aperitifs, refined dishes, light desserts or even subtly spiced Asian cuisine.

Some still Saint-Péray wines aged in barrel gain in complexity and can be kept for several years, developing notes of hazelnut and honey and lovely tension on the palate. These are wines that are both approachable and surprising, and well worth discovering.

Les Vins de Carole: the rare brilliance of Saint-Péray

At Les Vins de Carole, we shine a light on the hidden gems of French winemaking, and Saint-Péray is one of them. Our selection brings together three producers of character: Maison M. Chapoutier with its Tanneurs, a classic, taut expression of the appellation; Domaine Courbis and its essential Le Tram cuvée, a benchmark for lovers of the Northern Rhône; and Domaine Julien Pilon with Les Maisons de Victor, a precise, mineral cuvée from carefully tended vines. Whether you love original white wines or fine, elegant bubbles, let our Saint-Péray selection win you over.
