Saint Joseph: elegance and depth of northern Rhône wines

The Saint Joseph appellation, located on the right bank of the Rhône between Vienne and Valence, stretches for over 50 km. It is one of the prestigious wines of the Northern Rhône and is renowned for its delicate Syrah-based reds , as well as its rare whites made from Marsanne and Roussanne grapes. Formerly known as “Vin de Mauves,” this AOC, officially recognized in 1956, combines tradition with winemaking innovation.

A terroir stretched across granite hillsides

The Saint Joseph vineyard covers nearly 1,200 hectares spread across some fifty communes. It lies on steep slopes composed of granite, schist, and mica schist, ideal for expressing the minerality of Syrah. The climate is continental with Mediterranean influences: cold winters, dry summers, and plenty of sunshine, perfect for slow and balanced ripening.

The red wines (nearly 90% of production) are made exclusively from Syrah . They are distinguished by their deep color, aromas of black fruit (blackcurrant, blackberry), violet, spices, and sometimes leather. On the palate, they offer a beautiful tension, fine tannins, and remarkable length. The white wines , produced in limited quantities but of very high quality, are made from Marsanne and Roussanne . They offer aromas of white-fleshed fruit, almond, and honey, and a full, fresh palate.

Elegant and delicious food and wine pairings

Saint Joseph reds pair perfectly with grilled meats, duck breast, herb-roasted veal, stews, or aged cheeses. When young, they charm with their freshness and fruitiness; after a few years, they gain in complexity and depth.

The balanced and aromatic white wines pair well with fine fish, shellfish, veal stew, poultry in cream sauces, or mild cheeses like Saint-Félicien. They can be enjoyed young, but some vintages age beautifully for several years.
