Gigondas: the powerful and complete expression of southern Rhône wines
The Gigondas appellation, located on the foothills of the Dentelles de Montmirail, is one of the most prestigious in the Southern Rhône Valley. Since 1971 for reds and rosés, and officially since 2023 for whites, Gigondas has offered a range of exceptional wines that express the strength, elegance, and typicity of this unique terroir. Gigondas wines, made from Grenache , Syrah , Mourvèdre , and now also Clairette Blanche and other traditional white grape varieties, are prized for their intensity, structure, and remarkable aging potential.
A high-altitude terroir with character
The vineyards cover approximately 1,200 hectares, planted on terraces and hillsides, at altitudes ranging from 100 to 430 meters. The soils of Gigondas are composed of marl, sandstone, limestone scree, and red clay. This complex terroir, combined with a Mediterranean climate tempered by the altitude and the Mistral wind, promotes a slow and balanced ripening of the grapes. This geological diversity explains the rich expression of the wines, whether red, rosé, or white.
The reds of Gigondas: power and depth
Red wines make up the bulk of production. They are dominated by Grenache (minimum 50%), blended with Syrah and Mourvèdre . They display a deep color, aromas of ripe black fruit, garrigue, spices, and sometimes leather or tapenade. On the palate, these wines combine richness, silky tannins, aromatic intensity, and freshness. They are wines for aging par excellence.
The rosé wines of Gigondas: rare and gastronomic
Less well-known but equally high-quality, Gigondas rosés stand out for their intensity, structure, and complexity. Made from the same grape varieties as the reds, they are carefully crafted to offer a refined alternative to classic aperitif rosés. Ideal with a meal, they pair beautifully with Provençal cuisine.
The white wines of Gigondas: a new chapter
Since 2023, white wines have officially been part of the Gigondas AOC. They must contain at least 70% Clairette Blanche , often complemented by Grenache Blanc , Bourboulenc , or Roussanne . These white wines are rare but promising, with aromas of white flowers and citrus, and a fresh, saline, and structured palate. They demonstrate a desire for diversification while respecting tradition and terroir.
Food and wine pairings
Red wines pair perfectly with meats in sauce, herb-roasted lamb, game, and aged cheeses. Rosé wines complement grilled meats, Southern cuisine, and spicy dishes. White wines, on the other hand, enhance grilled fish, goat cheeses, and Mediterranean vegetable-based dishes.
