Village appellations: the heart of Burgundy's terroir

In the Burgundy hierarchy, village appellations hold a strategic position. Above the regional Bourgogne wines, which are produced across the whole region, village appellations delimit a precise commune area, often a few hundred hectares, whose reputation has been built over several centuries. Nuits-Saint-Georges, Meursault, Saint-Aubin, Givry, Viré-Clessé, Saint-Véran, Marsannay, Puligny-Montrachet: each of these names carries a recognisable taste identity, a style of its own that the grower expresses through work in the vineyard and in the cellar.

White Burgundy: the richness of the southern villages and the Côte

White Burgundy villages are the heart of our selection. In the Côte de Beaune, a Meursault village from Michel Bouzereau or Edouard Delaunay offers the buttery, slightly nutty and mineral profile that earned the appellation its worldwide reputation, at a price level well below that of the Premiers Crus. A Saint-Aubin blanc from Domaine Gérard Thomas or a Puligny-Montrachet from the same estate represents the most elegant way into the Côte de Beaune. In the Mâconnais, the Viré-Clessé from Domaine Le Virolys, the Saint-Véran from Domaine Thibert or Christophe Cordier and the Mâcon-Loché from Clos des Rocs embody the generosity of southern Chardonnay: fresh, floral and approachable.

Red Burgundy and the Côte Chalonnaise: finesse of terroir

The red villages of the Côte de Nuits offer their best value for money here. A Nuits-Saint-Georges village from Domaine Machard de Gramont (Les Damodes or Creux Fraîche Eau) expresses the restrained power and ferrous minerality typical of the appellation, without the outlay of a Premier Cru. A Marsannay or a Pernand-Vergelesses from Edouard Delaunay offers the elegance of the Côte at prices that are still affordable. In the Côte Chalonnaise, Givry with Laurent Mouton and Montagny with Domaine Berthenet deliver terroir wines of remarkable precision and typicity, often more affordable than their Côte d'Or equivalents.

When and how to drink them?

Most white villages are best enjoyed within 3 to 6 years of the harvest: young enough to keep their freshness, developed enough to reveal their complexity. Côte de Nuits red villages reward 4 to 7 years of patience, giving their tannins time to soften and their fruit time to take on tertiary notes. Serve the whites at 12 to 14 °C in large Burgundy glasses, and the reds at 15 to 17 °C after a short aeration of one hour.
