Burgundy
Domaine Machard de Gramont is located in the heart of Burgundy's wine region, on the prestigious terroirs of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. Its vineyards extend over approximately 20 hectares, stretching more than 50 kilometers from Chenôve, south of Dijon, to Puligny-Montrachet, south of Beaune. This unique geographical position allows the estate to cultivate a wide variety of climates and appellations, including Nuits-Saint-Georges, Aloxe-Corton, Pommard, Chorey-lès-Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune, and Puligny-Montrachet. The soils are primarily limestone and clay-limestone, imparting a beautiful minerality and refined structure to the wines. The varied exposures, orientations, and altitudes further enrich the complexity of the terroirs, a true hallmark of the estate's wines.
Pinot Noir (red), Chardonnay (white)
Domaine Machard de Gramont traces its origins back to the 19th century, within a family deeply rooted in Burgundian winemaking tradition. Today, Arnaud Machard de Gramont, along with his two sons Alban and Alexis, oversees the estate, perpetuating a vision based on transmission, rigor, and passion. The estate's headquarters are located in Prissey, a hamlet adjacent to Nuits-Saint-Georges, where the high-ceilinged vaulted cellars—comparable to a cathedral nave—offer ideal conditions for barrel aging. Aware of the importance of preserving biodiversity and the soil, the Machard de Gramont family has adopted a biodynamic approach across several plots, combining traditional farming practices, careful observation, and gentle interventions. This philosophy results in vibrant, living wines that express their terroir with precision and sincerity.
Production at Domaine Machard de Gramont is based on rigorous technical expertise and a deep respect for the grapes. The harvest is done by hand, allowing for meticulous sorting both in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification involves long fermentations in stainless steel or concrete tanks, with controlled temperatures and gentle extraction techniques (punching down and pumping over). Aging takes place primarily in French oak barrels, with a moderate use of new oak to avoid masking the fruit or the typicity of the terroir. Aging times vary depending on the cuvée, but always aim for a balance between structure, finesse, and complexity. Each cuvée benefits from individual attention, from pressing to bottling, guaranteeing an authentic and elegant expression.
Domaine Machard de Gramont enjoys a growing reputation among discerning wine lovers and professionals. Its wines are regularly featured in specialist guides such as Bettane+Desseauve, the Hachette Wine Guide, and Bourgogne Aujourd'hui. Critics highlight the wines' harmony, the precision of the fruit, the freshness of the whites, and the depth of the reds. The estate's Nuits-Saint-Georges wines are often praised for their elegance and aging potential, while the Puligny-Montrachet wines impress with their structure and mineral tension. This success stems from a consistent style, unwavering quality, and a genuine commitment to excellence at every stage of production.
Domaine Machard de Gramont has established itself as a discreet yet reliable ambassador for Burgundy wines. Through its respectful practices, the richness of its terroirs, and its commitment to family values, it offers characterful, approachable yet profound wines that accurately reflect the nobility of their origin. Whether for a first introduction to Burgundy or to enrich a connoisseur's cellar, its wines offer a genuine and unpretentious tasting experience.
