Viré-Clessé: the freshness and finesse of the great white wines of the Mâconnais region

Established in 1999, the Viré-Clessé appellation is one of Burgundy's newest communal AOCs. It encompasses the villages of Viré and Clessé, in the heart of the Mâconnais region , and produces exclusively dry white wines from the Chardonnay grape. Renowned for its balance between aromatic richness and freshness, this appellation is gaining recognition among lovers of characterful white wines.

A limestone terroir in southern Burgundy

The Viré-Clessé vineyard covers approximately 390 hectares. It lies on clay-limestone soils dating back to the Jurassic period, perfectly suited to Chardonnay. The vines benefit from a southern Burgundian climate , with good exposure and a continental influence moderated by the more southerly latitude.

The wines of Viré-Clessé are distinguished by their floral and fruity expression . On the nose, they develop aromas of white flowers, peach, pear, citrus fruits, and dried fruit. On the palate, they offer a lovely roundness, a pronounced freshness, sometimes a touch of salinity, and an elegant finish. Some cuvées, made from overripe grapes (without being sweet), display a honeyed note and great complexity.

Subtle and harmonious food and wine pairings

Viré-Clessé wines pair perfectly with seafood , grilled fish , poultry in cream sauce , quiches , or roasted vegetables . Their freshness also makes them excellent aperitif wines, or wines to serve with pressed cheeses (young Comté, Beaufort) or soft cheeses.

The best vintages can age for 5 to 10 years, developing more complex aromas of dried fruit, honey, or dried flowers. These are wines that are both enjoyable young and interesting to cellar .

Les Vins de Carole: the quintessence of the Mâconnais

At Les Vins de Carole, we offer a carefully curated selection of Viré-Clessé wines from passionate winemakers, often practicing organic or sustainable agriculture. Our wines showcase the diversity of the appellation's terroirs, with crisp, fruity whites, sometimes rounder or more structured, depending on their origin. A delightful discovery for lovers of Burgundian-style Chardonnay, without excessive oak or opulence.
