Mâcon wines: the freshness and authenticity of southern Burgundy

The Mâcon appellation, located at the southern tip of Burgundy's wine region, stretches across the rolling hills of the Saône-et-Loire department. It is renowned for its crisp, fruity white wines made from Chardonnay grapes , but also produces red and rosé wines from Pinot Noir and Gamay. This sunny region combines tradition and accessibility, offering characterful wines with excellent value for money.

A protected designation of origin with a generous geography

Established in 1937, the Mâcon AOC covers approximately 3,800 hectares, spread across some thirty communes surrounding the city of Mâcon. The appellation is divided into several geographical designations (Mâcon + commune name), such as Mâcon-Villages, Mâcon-Lugny, and Mâcon-Charnay-lès-Mâcon , which highlight the specific terroirs. The limestone and clay-limestone soils , combined with a more southerly climate than the rest of Burgundy, produce wines that are sunny, balanced, and approachable even in their youth.

Chardonnay, king of Mâcon white wines

The white wines of Mâcon are made exclusively from the Chardonnay grape. They are distinguished by their freshness, expressive fruitiness (pear, apple, citrus, white flowers), roundness, and finesse. Depending on the terroir and the winemaker's style, they can develop more mineral, floral, or slightly oaky profiles if aged in oak barrels. These wines are perfect for drinking young, but some cuvées have excellent aging potential.

Red and rosé wines: wines for pleasure

The red wines , made primarily from Gamay (and sometimes Pinot Noir ), are supple and luscious, with aromas of crisp red fruits (cherry, raspberry), light spices, and a lovely freshness. They are perfect for lovers of fruity reds and are easy to pair with food.

The rosés , rare but charming, are made from the same grape varieties and reveal a lovely vivacity and aromas of strawberry or redcurrant, ideal for aperitifs or summer dishes.

Food and wine pairings and tasting moments

Mâcon white wines pair wonderfully with seafood, grilled fish, composed salads, goat cheese , and vegetarian dishes . The reds are ideal with charcuterie, grilled meats, roast poultry , or dishes with light sauces . The rosés are delicious with summer salads, Mediterranean dishes, or as an aperitif .
