Marsannay: the elegance and diversity of a rising appellation in the Côte de Nuits

Located at the northern entrance to the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, the Marsannay appellation is emerging as one of the most promising in the Burgundy wine region. Long overlooked, it now captivates enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike with its unique versatility : it is the only village appellation in the Côte de Nuits to produce red, rosé, and white wines . This richness makes Marsannay a true gem to discover, combining tradition, innovation, and a profound expression of its terroir.

A vineyard in full recognition

Classified as a communal AOC since 1987, Marsannay covers approximately 230 hectares spread across the communes of Marsannay-la-Côte, Couchey, and Chenôve . The clay-limestone soils typical of Burgundy, combined with a favorable altitude (between 250 and 400 meters), allow for high-quality viticulture. While the appellation does not yet officially have any Premier Cru vineyards, numerous climats are currently undergoing classification, demonstrating the growing potential of this terroir.

Red wines: elegance and depth

Marsannay reds , made exclusively from Pinot Noir , have an intense color and aromas of red and black fruits, sweet spices, and licorice . On the palate, they combine freshness, structure, and finesse , with excellent aging potential. Some vineyard sites reveal a pronounced minerality, while others offer a more velvety texture, always in keeping with the spirit of the great wines of the Côte de Nuits.

White wines: freshness and minerality

The white wines of Marsannay , made from Chardonnay grapes, are captivating for their purity, tension, and aromatic richness : notes of citrus, white flowers, stone fruit, and hazelnut. Aged in tanks or barrels depending on the estate, they gain complexity with time while remaining very approachable in their youth.

Rosé wines: the historical specialty

Another distinctive feature of the appellation is the rosé wines of Marsannay , which have a long-standing reputation. Made from Pinot Noir , sometimes blended with Pinot Gris , these rosés are distinguished by their aromatic intensity, vinous texture, and lovely freshness . They pair equally well with summer cuisine and more elaborate dishes.

Food and wine pairings

Red Marsannay wines are perfect with roasted meats, duck breast, game birds, or aged cheeses . White Marsannay wines pair wonderfully with fine fish, poultry in cream sauce, vegetarian dishes, or mild cheeses . Rosé Marsannay wines complement grilled meats, Asian cuisine, tapas, or composed salads .
