Premiers Crus: the excellence of Burgundy's terroirs

In Burgundy, the classification of vineyards is an ancient and precise science. At the top sit the Grands Crus, a few dozen exceptional plots. Just below them come the Premiers Crus: several hundred delimited ‘climats’, each bearing its own name, each expressing an irreducible terroir identity. This is where the truth of Burgundy wine lies, where the relationship between quality, typicity and price is still within reach, before the soaring prices of Grand Cru labels.

What ‘Premier Cru’ means in Burgundy

A Burgundy Premier Cru is a plot officially classified by the INAO, identified by its climat name and subject to lower yields than village appellations. The label shows the name of the appellation followed by the name of the climat: Givry Premier Cru Le Vigron, Chablis Premier Cru Vau Ligneau, Saint-Aubin Premier Cru Les Cortons. This detail is not cosmetic: it reflects a terroir reality that you can verify in the glass.

Our selection covers the whole geography of Burgundy's Premiers Crus: Chablis with Bernard Michaut and Grand Calcaire, Givry with Domaine Vincent Lumpp, Mercurey with Domaine Charton, Montagny with Domaine Berthenet, Rully with Domaine Jacques Dury, Saint-Aubin with Bouzereau-Gruère and Domaine Larue, Chassagne-Montrachet with Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard, and the Côte de Beaune with Maison Edouard Delaunay.

Whites and reds: two expressions of terroir

White Premiers Crus are the most sought after: a Chablis Premier Cru reveals a unique chalky minerality and iodine-like tension, while a Meursault or Chassagne Premier Cru unfolds a buttery richness and a depth that become remarkably refined after 5 to 8 years in the cellar. Red Premiers Crus (Givry, Mercurey, Beaune, Pommard) express the quintessence of Burgundy Pinot Noir: finesse, delicate red fruit, silky tannins and a persistence on the palate that village appellations reach only in exceptional cases.

When and how should you drink them?

The vast majority of our Premiers Crus can be enjoyed now, with an hour of aeration for the reds. But they fully reveal themselves after 4 to 8 years in the cellar, depending on the appellation and the vintage. Serve the whites at 12 to 14 °C in large Burgundy glasses that release their aromas, and the reds at 15 to 17 °C. At the table, pair them with dishes worthy of them: roast poultry, fine fish in sauce, truffled white meats, well-aged cheeses.
