Burgundy – Côte de Beaune
Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard cultivates 12 hectares of vines, primarily in the commune of Chassagne-Montrachet, the birthplace of some of Burgundy's greatest white wines. The estate also owns parcels in Volnay and Pommard. It benefits from an exceptional heritage of vineyard sites, with prestigious appellations such as Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru La Boudriotte, Les Vergers, and Les Caillerets, as well as Grand Cru vineyards like Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, and Le Montrachet. The well-drained limestone soils and varied exposures impart finesse, minerality, and structure to the wines.
Chardonnay (white) – Pinot Noir (red)
Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard was founded in 1985 by Laurence Gagnard, daughter of Jacques and Marie-Josèphe Gagnard, and her husband Richard Fontaine. Heirs to a line of winemakers deeply rooted in Chassagne-Montrachet, they have successfully developed the estate while respecting family traditions. Today, their daughter, Céline Fontaine, is at the helm. The estate champions precision viticulture, grounded in sustainable practices, in harmony with natural balances and with respect for the terroir.
The vineyard is managed according to sustainable farming principles. The soils are tilled, treatments are limited to the bare minimum, and yields are kept low. The harvest is done by hand, with meticulous sorting both in the vineyard and at the winery. In the cellar, vinification is carried out plot by plot, with an approach tailored to the potential of each wine. The white wines are gently pressed, fermented in oak barrels with light stirring, and then aged on their lees for 12 to 18 months. The red wines, made from Pinot Noir, are vinified with gentle extraction and measured aging, preserving the purity of the fruit and the finesse of the tannins.
Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard is critically acclaimed for the consistency and quality of its wines, particularly its Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru and Grand Cru wines. These wines combine crystalline elegance, beautiful mineral tension, and increasing complexity with age. They regularly feature in the selections of top guides (Bettane+Desseauve, RVF, Guide Hachette, etc.). The white wines are distinguished by their subtle balance of richness and freshness, while the reds display a structural finesse typical of great Pinot Noirs from the Côte de Beaune.
Discreet yet refined, Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard embodies the essence of the Burgundian style: precision, elegance, and respect for the terroir. A must-visit for lovers of finely crafted white wines and delicate reds.
