Mercurey: jewel of the Côte Chalonnaise, between tradition and excellence

The Mercurey appellation is one of the most emblematic of the Côte Chalonnaise in Burgundy. Located between Rully and Givry, it benefits from a diverse terroir and excellent sun exposure, making it an exceptional region for the production of Pinot Noir and, to a lesser extent, Chardonnay . Mercurey wines are prized for their structure, fruitiness, and aging potential , both red and white.

A vineyard rich in history and terroir

Mercurey, whose name is derived from the Roman god Mercury, was already an important wine-growing site in Gallo-Roman times. The AOC was created in 1936 and today covers nearly 650 hectares, making it one of the largest in Burgundy. The appellation includes 30 Premier Cru vineyards , illustrating the geological diversity of the area: clay-limestone soils, marl, gravel , and a southeast exposure that promotes optimal ripening.

The reds: powerful and elegant Pinot Noirs

The predominantly red Mercurey wines are made from Pinot Noir and are characterized by their intense color and aromas of cherry, blackberry, violet, spice, and forest floor . On the palate, they offer a beautiful tannic structure, balanced acidity, and a persistent finish. The Premier Cru wines are distinguished by their complexity, finesse, and aging potential. These are wines that are both generous and elegant , perfect for lovers of characterful Burgundy.

White wines: finesse and freshness

Mercurey's white wines , made from Chardonnay grapes, are fewer in number but of exceptional quality. They offer aromas of white flowers, citrus, dried fruit, and sometimes a touch of oak when aged in oak barrels. On the palate, they are full-bodied and balanced, with a lovely mineral tension. These white wines pair perfectly with fish, seafood, or poultry in sauce.

Food and wine pairings

Mercurey reds pair wonderfully with grilled red meats, game, stews, or aged cheeses . The whites complement grilled or sauced fish, seafood, poultry in cream sauce, or soft cheeses . These are versatile wines, capable of elegantly accompanying an entire meal.

A reliable choice in the Côte Chalonnaise region

Mercurey impresses with its excellent value for money, its diverse styles, and the consistency of its wines. Less expensive than the wines of the Côte de Nuits or the Côte de Beaune, but often of equivalent quality, Mercurey is an essential appellation for anyone wishing to discover or delve deeper into the great red wines of Burgundy , with some very fine whites to explore as well.
