Gevrey-Chambertin estates at Les Vins de Carole

Our selection is built on committed estates that farm their vines with respect for the Burgundian terroir:

  • Domaine Dugat-Py: a benchmark of the Côte de Nuits, organically farmed old vines, powerful and thoroughbred Grands Crus
  • Frédéric Magnien: single-plot cuvées, precise Pinot Noir, in conversion to organic farming
  • Domaine Huguenot: organic wines from Fixin and Gevrey-Chambertin, elegance and finesse
  • Domaine David Duband: 23 appellations, whole-bunch harvests, village and Premier Cru Gevrey

Terroir and appellations

The Gevrey-Chambertin appellation covers about 400 hectares in the Côte de Nuits, including 9 Grands Crus and many Premiers Crus. Its limestone, marl and clay-limestone soils offer Pinot Noir exceptional conditions: Chambertin and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze are among the greatest red wines in the world. The Premiers Crus (Clos Saint-Jacques, Lavaux Saint-Jacques, Les Cazetiers) often rival them in finesse and potential.

Wine profile

Ruby to deep garnet colour. A deep nose of black fruit, black cherry, liquorice and spice, evolving towards leather, undergrowth and truffle with age. A structured palate, smooth tannins, balanced acidity and a long finish. These wines are made for ageing: 8 to 20 years depending on the cuvée and the vintage.

Gevrey-Chambertin prices

At Les Vins de Carole, village Gevrey-Chambertin starts at around €30-50, Premiers Crus cost €60-120 and Grands Crus go higher. The 2019, 2020 and 2022 vintages are highly sought after for their balance and potential.

Food and wine pairings

Grilled beef, dry-aged rib of beef, roast duck, game in sauce, Époisses, aged Comté. The village wines and Premiers Crus open up after 5 to 8 years; the Grands Crus deserve a decade of patience.

Gevrey-Chambertin FAQ

What is the difference between village Gevrey-Chambertin and Premier Cru?
Village wines come from across the whole appellation; Premiers Crus come from delimited, classified plots and are generally more concentrated and complex, with greater ageing potential.

Should you decant a Gevrey-Chambertin?
For young vintages (less than 8 years old), an hour in a decanter is recommended to soften the tannins and release the aromas. Great older vintages do not need decanting.

What are the best recent vintages?
2019 (fruity and structured), 2020 (powerful, sun-drenched) and 2022 (very promising, complex) are the recent benchmarks. 2021 offers remarkable freshness at a more accessible price.
