Mourvèdre: a powerful red grape variety with excellent aging potential

Mourvèdre is an emblematic red grape variety of southern regions, renowned for its structured, profound wines capable of long aging. Cultivated particularly in Provence and Languedoc, it is also found in Spain under the name Monastrell. Mourvèdre produces dense reds with complex aromas, sometimes rustic in their youth, but which develop beautifully with age.

Origin and terroirs

Originally from the Iberian Peninsula, Mourvèdre has become established in Provence and the south of France, particularly in the Bandol appellation, where it reaches its peak. It is also cultivated in the Languedoc appellations (La Clape, Saint-Chinian, Corbières) and is used in the blends of southern Côtes du Rhône wines. This demanding grape variety thrives in warm, sunny locations and well-drained soils, often near the sea.

Wines with character and aging potential

Mourvèdre produces wines with a deep color and a powerful nose of black fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant), spices, leather, and sometimes game. On the palate, it is structured, tannic, and long, gaining finesse with a few years of aging. As a rosé, as in Bandol, it yields full-bodied, gastronomic wines, far beyond simple thirst-quenching rosés. It is an ideal grape variety for lovers of profound and authentic wines.

Food and wine pairings with Mourvèdre

Mourvèdre red wines pair perfectly with hearty dishes: Provençal stew, confit lamb, game, braised meats, tagines, or roasted vegetables with garrigue herbs. The more structured rosés complement grilled fish, white meats, or sunny Mediterranean cuisine. This grape variety calls for a generous and flavorful regional cuisine.

Our selection of Mourvèdre

Les Vins de Carole offers a carefully curated selection of Mourvèdre-based wines, both red and rosé. These bottles come from renowned estates in Bandol and Languedoc, as well as typical blends from the South of France. Discover or rediscover this noble, wild, and captivating grape variety.
