Sancerre estates at Les Vins de Carole

  • Domaine Henri Bourgeois: an essential benchmark in Sancerre, present on all three soil types, with a full range of white, red and rosé
  • Domaine Fournier Père et Fils: a family winegrower from Verdigny, precise and mineral Sauvignon Blanc in the classic style of the appellation

Terroir: three soils, three styles

The Sancerre vineyard covers 3,000 hectares around the town of the same name. Three soil types shape three distinct expressions of Sauvignon Blanc:

  • Caillottes (limestone): fine, fruity, elegant wines, for drinking young
  • Terres blanches (clay-limestone): structured, fuller wines with ageing potential
  • Silex (flint): taut minerality, a much sought-after smoky signature, great complexity

Wine profile

The whites, made exclusively from Sauvignon Blanc, express white flowers, citrus, boxwood or gunflint depending on the terroir. The palate is fresh, precise and long. The Pinot Noir reds and rosés reveal aromas of small red berries with a silky texture.

Food and wine pairings

White Sancerre is the perfect companion for seafood, grilled fish, tartares, Asian cuisine and Crottin de Chavignol (the local goat's cheese). The rosés go with salads and light grilled dishes; the reds with poultry and vegetarian dishes.

Sancerre FAQ

What is the difference between Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé?
Both are Loire Sauvignon Blancs grown on similar terroirs. Sancerre is generally more floral and fruity; Pouilly-Fumé more mineral and smoky. Both remain among the greatest white wines of the Loire.

Can you keep a Sancerre?
Whites from terres blanches or silex benefit from 3 to 7 years of ageing. Caillottes wines are more for immediate enjoyment (1 to 3 years). The reds keep for 5 to 10 years in good vintages.
