Savennières: a Chenin Blanc with character, dry and noble

The Savennières appellation is one of the Loire Valley's best-kept secrets. Located west of Angers, on the right bank of the Loire, it produces exclusively dry white wines made from Chenin Blanc grapes . Granted AOC status in 1952, Savennières is renowned for its powerful, complex, and age-worthy wines, which precisely express the schist terroirs of the Loire Valley.

A demanding terroir, the hallmark of great white wines

The Savennières vineyard covers approximately 150 hectares spread across three appellations: Savennières, Savennières-Roche-aux-Moines, and Savennières-Coulée de Serrant (a monopoly of Domaine Joly). The vines are planted on steep, south and southwest-facing slopes, in soils of schist, sandstone, and windblown sand . This poor, well-drained terroir, combined with a temperate oceanic climate, gives rise to deep, vibrant, and elegant Chenin Blanc wines.

Savennières wines are distinguished by their aromatic richness: white fruits (apple, pear), quince, dried fruits, floral and mineral notes, sometimes honeyed, or even slightly smoky. On the palate, the structure is ample and taut, with remarkable acidity and exceptional aging potential—some wines improve for 15 to 20 years, or even longer.

Gourmet food and wine pairings

A Savennières wine often demands a dish that matches its complexity. It pairs wonderfully with fine fish (turbot, sea bass, pike-perch), cooked shellfish, poultry in sauce, creamy risottos, or aged cheeses such as Comté, Cantal, or dry goat cheese. It also enhances vegetarian cuisine featuring mushrooms or roasted vegetables. Served slightly chilled (11–12°C), it reveals its full depth.
