Menetou-Salon: a Centre-Loire gem combining freshness, finesse and authenticity

A neighbour of famous Sancerre, the Menetou-Salon appellation is a little-known Centre-Loire AOC that is winning over more and more lovers of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Located in the Cher department, north-east of Bourges, this appellation produces expressive white wines, delicate reds and elegant rosés, all marked by the freshness and purity of their terroir.

An ancient history, a dynamic present

Menetou-Salon's winemaking origins date back to at least the 11th century, and were supported by the Dukes of Berry. Since gaining AOC status in 1959, the appellation's reputation has grown steadily, thanks in particular to passionate growers who champion the clay-limestone and Kimmeridgian terroirs, similar to those of Sancerre and Chablis.

Precise, vibrant Sauvignon Blanc whites

White Menetou-Salon, made exclusively from the Sauvignon Blanc grape, offers typical aromas of white flowers, exotic fruit, citrus and mineral notes. On the palate, the wines are lively and taut, with a long, saline finish. They show a remarkable balance between freshness and aromatic expression, and can be enjoyed young or after a few years of ageing.

Subtle, charming reds

Red Menetou-Salon is made from Pinot Noir. Its colour is a clear ruby, and its nose evokes fresh red fruit, peony and sometimes forest floor. On the palate, these wines are refined and supple, with delicate, silky tannins. Less powerful than some Burgundies, they shine through their finesse and natural elegance. They are very easy to drink and versatile at the table.

Fresh, fruity rosés

Menetou-Salon rosés, also made from Pinot Noir, stand out for their freshness, their crunchy fruit (strawberry, redcurrant, cherry) and their good length on the palate. Ideal for summer aperitifs or light dishes, they reveal the full potential of the terroir, even in this more approachable style.

Food and wine pairings

The whites are a perfect match for seafood, oysters, grilled fish, fresh goat's cheeses (such as Crottin de Chavignol), Asian dishes or mixed salads. The reds pair well with white meats, roast poultry, grilled vegetables or bistro cooking. As for the rosés, they will shine alongside summer starters, tapas or grilled dishes.

Our Menetou-Salon selection

At Les Vins de Carole, we have selected two essential names from the appellation: Henri Bourgeois, an iconic figure of the Centre-Loire, with its Prieuré des Aublats cuvées and its Menetou-Salon white 2024 of great aromatic clarity; and Domaine Fournier Père et Fils, whose Côtes de Morogues cuvée, in both white and red, precisely expresses the appellation's Kimmeridgian character. An excellent alternative to Sancerre, often offering 20 to 30% better value for money.
