Discover Gamay: an emblematic grape variety of Beaujolais and beyond

Gamay is an emblematic red grape variety of the Beaujolais region, south of Burgundy. Known for its fruity, supple, and luscious wines, this variety is now recognized far beyond its native lands. Lovers of light-bodied red wines with vibrant aromas and immediate approachability will find unexpected richness in Gamay.

A grape variety with a centuries-old history

Gamay originated in Burgundy, where it was first mentioned in the 14th century. Long considered secondary to the prestigious Pinot Noir, it has established itself through its joyful and generous character. Today, it is the signature grape of Beaujolais, particularly in its renowned crus such as Morgon, Fleurie, Moulin-à-Vent, and Brouilly. Gamay is also cultivated in the Loire Valley (Touraine and Cheverny AOCs) and in Switzerland, where it reveals other aromatic facets.

Fruity, approachable, and increasingly gastronomic wines

Wines made from Gamay are distinguished by their freshness, suppleness, and characteristic aromas of small red fruits: cherry, raspberry, and redcurrant, sometimes enhanced with floral or spicy notes depending on the terroir. They can be vinified young—like the famous Beaujolais Nouveau—or aged for greater complexity. Some Beaujolais crus thus offer robust, structured profiles suitable for aging, rivaling more expensive Burgundies.

Food and wine pairings with Gamay

Gamay is a true chameleon at the table. Its lighter versions pair perfectly with fine charcuterie, white meats, composed salads, or vegetarian dishes. The more powerful vintages enhance roast poultry, coq au vin, mushroom risottos, or soft cheeses. Served slightly chilled (between 14 and 16°C), Gamay reveals all its vibrancy and fruitiness.

Our Gamay suggestions

At Les Vins de Carole, we offer a carefully curated selection of Gamay wines, ranging from accessible Beaujolais-Villages to renowned crus like Morgon and Juliénas, produced by leading estates. Let yourself be seduced by their authenticity, finesse, and excellent value.
