Roussanne: a refined white grape variety with Rhône origins

Roussanne is a noble white grape variety typical of southern France, particularly the Rhône Valley and Languedoc. Prized for its elegance, aromatic complexity, and aging potential, it is often blended with Marsanne but reveals its full finesse when vinified on its own. It appeals to lovers of structured, floral white wines with a beautiful intensity on the palate.

Origin, terroirs and flagship appellations

Originating in the Northern Rhône Valley, Roussanne is found in prestigious appellations such as Hermitage , Saint-Joseph , Crozes-Hermitage , and Saint-Péray . In the south, it is also cultivated in Languedoc and Provence, often blended with Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, or Vermentino. It is also permitted in Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc. This grape variety, delicate to cultivate, requires careful attention...

Aromatic profile and winemaking

Roussanne produces wines with a golden hue and an expressive bouquet of white flowers (acacia, hawthorn), stone fruits (peach, apricot), honey, dried fruit, and sometimes slightly toasted or smoky notes. On the palate, it offers a full texture, moderate acidity sufficient to balance the wine's richness, and a long, lingering finish. It can be aged in stainless steel tanks, on its fine lees, or in barrels, depending on the desired style, and often develops magnificent aromas with age.

Food and wine pairings with Roussanne

Thanks to its structure and complexity, Roussanne pairs brilliantly with refined cuisine: fine fish in sauce, roast poultry, creamy white meats, shellfish, pike quenelles, or even hard cheeses (Comté, Beaufort). It also complements mushroom dishes or truffle-based cuisine. Its richness and finesse make it an exceptional white wine for the finest restaurants.

Our selection of Roussanne

At Les Vins de Carole, we celebrate this discreet yet exceptional grape variety through a selection of wines from renowned estates in the Rhône Valley and Languedoc. Complex, expressive, and age-worthy white wines, perfect for discovering or rediscovering the full nobility of Roussanne.
