Rolle: the Mediterranean white grape variety full of freshness

Rolle, also known as Vermentino in other parts of the Mediterranean basin, is an iconic white grape variety from the south of France. Typical of the sun-drenched terroirs of Provence, Corsica, and Languedoc, it appeals to lovers of crisp, aromatic white wines. Thanks to its beautiful natural acidity and enticing aromatic profile, Rolle has become a staple on summer tables, and beyond.

Origin and emblematic terroirs of Rolle

Rolle has its roots in the Mediterranean region. Cultivated in France, Italy (notably in Liguria and Sardinia under the name Vermentino), and Spain (where it is known as Pigato), it thrives in warm regions with poor, well-drained soils. In Provence, it is very common in the Côtes de Provence , Bellet (near Nice), IGP Méditerranée , and Corsican appellations, often vinified on its own or in blends.

Aromatic profile and winemaking styles

Rolle produces wines with a pale, brilliant color and vibrant aromas of pear, lemon, grapefruit, white flowers, fresh herbs (fennel, thyme), and sometimes a hint of iodine. Its expression varies depending on the terroir: at higher altitudes, it retains a beautiful mineral tension, while Mediterranean wines can be more generous, sometimes with aging on fine lees adding roundness. This grape variety yields dry, refreshing white wines, often marked by their terroir.

Food and wine pairings with Rolle

The freshness and floral character of Rolle make it an excellent companion to seafood dishes: grilled fish, ceviche, shellfish, sea bream carpaccio, or shellfish. It also pairs beautifully with Provençal cuisine, summer salads, fresh goat cheeses, grilled vegetables, or Mediterranean dishes made with olive oil and herbs.

Our selection of Rolle

Les Vins de Carole offers a carefully curated selection of white wines made from Rolle grapes, produced by quality estates located in Provence, Corsica, and Languedoc. These aromatic, elegant, and refreshing wines are ideal as an aperitif or to accompany fine cuisine. A wonderful opportunity to discover this typical Southern grape variety, combining lightness, finesse, and a true expression of its terroir.
