Pinot Meunier: a discreet grape variety, essential to Champagne

Pinot Meunier is a black grape variety with white juice, a cousin of Pinot Noir, widely used in Champagne. Less well-known than its counterparts Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, it nevertheless plays a central role in the production of many Champagnes, bringing fruitiness, suppleness, and roundness to the blends. Rarely vinified on its own, it reveals itself in certain limited-production single-varietal cuvées, with a surprising and seductive personality.

Origin and growing area

Pinot Meunier is primarily cultivated in the Marne Valley, one of the major sub-regions of Champagne. It represents about a third of the Champagne grape varieties planted. Its name comes from the light white down that covers its leaves, reminiscent of flour (“meunier” means “miller,” referring to this visual detail). It is also found in Alsace, Germany (where it is known as Schwarzriesling), and to a lesser extent in other regions.

A grape variety with a fruity and approachable profile

Pinot Meunier brings an immediate and appealing touch to wines: red fruits (strawberry, raspberry, redcurrant), floral notes, and sometimes a hint of spice. In Champagne blends, it is valued for its ability to balance the tension of Chardonnay and the power of Pinot Noir. Champagnes dominated by Pinot Meunier are often supple, round, and easy to enjoy young, but some also age gracefully.

Food and wine pairings with Pinot Meunier

Champagnes made from Pinot Meunier are perfect as an aperitif, with savory appetizers, white meats, roast poultry, or even sweet and savory dishes like duck breast with red berries. They also pair well with creamy or soft-ripened cheeses. In its still form (rare), Pinot Meunier complements delicate, fruity cuisine.
