Carignan: the grape of old Mediterranean vines

Carignan long suffered from a poor reputation, associated with the industrial table wines of Languedoc in the last century. This is unfair, and it is changing. When it is grown as old vines (30, 50, sometimes 80 years old), on the poor, stony soils of Languedoc or Roussillon, and vinified with care, Carignan reveals a depth, complexity and authenticity that few southern grape varieties can match. This is precisely the profile we looked for in our selection.

Languedoc and Roussillon: the two benchmark terroirs

Our selection is built around two areas. In Languedoc, Les Jamelles offer two expressions of Carignan: a classic cuvée and Le Beillou, from selected old vines, which goes up a notch in depth and concentration. Domaine d'Aupilhac in Montpeyroux produces a remarkably precise organic cuvée from one of the finest terroirs in Languedoc. In Roussillon, Le Clos des Fées offers a Vieilles Vignes cuvée made from Grenache and Carignan, vinified with great personality by Hervé Bizeul. Abbotts & Delaunay completes the range with very approachable Côtes du Roussillon and Minervois cuvées.

Profile and pairings

Old-vine Carignan is characterised by a deep colour, tannins that are present but never aggressive, and an aromatic profile dominated by stewed black fruit, spices (pepper, liquorice), garrigue and sometimes a mineral note of graphite. It is a wine of character, made for grilled meats, slow-cooked dishes, Provençal cuisine and mature cheeses. Serve it between 16 and 17 °C, decanting the youngest wines for 30 minutes.
