Syrah: the power and elegance of an iconic grape variety

Syrah is one of the noblest red grape varieties in the wine world, powerful, aromatic, and elegant. Originating in the Northern Rhône Valley, it has established itself in numerous terroirs, both in France and internationally, thanks to its ability to reflect the climate and soil in which it grows. It produces deep, deeply colored, expressive wines, often with excellent aging potential.

Origin, regions and flagship appellations

Syrah originated in the northern Rhône Valley , where it is the only red grape variety permitted in prestigious appellations such as Côte-Rôtie , Saint-Joseph , Hermitage , and Cornas . In southern France, it is used in the blends of many Languedoc and Southern Rhône Valley wines, alongside Grenache and Mourvèdre. It is also found in...

Aromatic profile and winemaking

Syrah is distinguished by its intense, dark, and deep color. Its nose is powerful and complex, with typical aromas of ripe black fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant, plum), spices (black pepper, clove), violet, black olives, and sometimes leather and licorice. Young wines are fruity and intense, while aging in oak barrels imparts woody, toasty, and even chocolatey notes. As it ages, Syrah develops complex tertiary aromas and a silkier mouthfeel. It can...

Food and wine pairings with Syrah

Syrah is a quintessential gastronomic wine. It pairs wonderfully with grilled or sauced red meats, game, lamb, spicy stews (tagines, daubes), robust charcuterie, and hard, aged cheeses. The fresher, more floral versions from the north also complement pink meats or more refined dishes.

Our selection of Syrah

At Les Vins de Carole, we offer a carefully curated selection of Syrah wines, ranging from prestigious Northern Rhône appellations to more approachable wines from Languedoc and Roussillon. Powerful, elegant, and balanced, our Syrahs are ideal for lovers of expressive red wines with a beautiful structure. An iconic grape variety to (re)discover in all its diversity.
