Grenache noir: the sun-drenched grape variety of the great red wines of the south

Grenache Noir is one of the most widely cultivated grape varieties in the world and a cornerstone of southern French wines. Originally from Spain, it is now essential in the prestigious appellations of the Southern Rhône, Languedoc-Roussillon, and Provence. It produces warm, generous, and powerful red wines, as well as naturally sweet wines renowned for their richness and aging potential.

Origins and major wine regions

Grenache Noir – or Garnacha Tinta in Spain – originates from the Iberian Peninsula, where it is still widely cultivated, particularly in the regions of Aragon, Navarre, and Catalonia. In France, it reigns supreme in the southern appellations: Châteauneuf-du-Pape , Gigondas , Rasteau , Côtes du Roussillon , as well as Minervois and Corbières . It is also used to make naturally sweet wines such as Maury and Banyuls.

A grape variety with multiple expressions

Grenache Noir is distinguished by its ability to produce full-bodied, generous red wines with a high alcohol content. It develops intense aromas of ripe red fruit, plum, sweet spices, and garrigue, sometimes accompanied by notes of cocoa or leather with age. It is often blended with Syrah and Mourvèdre in balanced and complex wines. As a naturally sweet wine, it yields powerful, smooth wines, perfect for aging.

Food and wine pairings with Grenache noir

Red wines made from Grenache Noir are perfect for accompanying flavorful dishes: grilled red meats, Provençal stews, tagines, cassoulet, or mushroom dishes. Naturally sweet wines pair wonderfully with dark chocolate desserts, dried fruits, or blue cheeses. Their aromatic intensity and velvety texture make them superb wines for contemplation.
