Grenache blanc: a white grape variety from the south with a full and refined profile

Less well-known than its red counterpart, Grenache Blanc is nonetheless a remarkable grape variety, typical of southern vineyards. Grown primarily in Languedoc-Roussillon, the Rhône Valley, and Spain, it produces dry or slightly rich white wines, often vinified with care to reveal their full complexity. Its aromatic potential and roundness on the palate appeal to lovers of generous and authentic white wines.

Origin and production areas

Grenache Blanc is a mutation of Grenache Noir, originating in the south of France. Widely used in the blends of Côtes du Roussillon , Corbières , Minervois , and Côtes du Rhône appellations, it is often combined with other grape varieties such as Roussanne, Marsanne, or Vermentino to create balanced white wines. In Spain, it is known as Garnacha Blanca, particularly in Catalonia and Aragon.

Aromatic profile and wine styles

Grenache Blanc is distinguished by its richness, its unctuous texture, and its remarkable ability to express the terroir. On the nose, it reveals notes of pear, ripe apple, white flowers, and fresh almond, sometimes with a touch of honey or fennel. On the palate, it is full-bodied and round, with moderate acidity. Some winemakers choose barrel aging to add complexity and volume, resulting in beautifully structured, gastronomic white wines.

Food and wine pairings with Grenache blanc

Thanks to its structure, Grenache Blanc pairs well with a wide variety of dishes. It is perfect with fish in sauce, white meats (poultry in cream sauce, filet mignon), soft cheeses (Brie, Camembert), or even vegetarian dishes featuring roasted vegetables or quiches. Barrel-aged wines also beautifully complement risottos or dishes with Mediterranean influences.
