Primarily located in the Côte de Beaune (Pommard, Beaune, Meursault, Volnay, etc.) and the Côte de Nuits (Mazis-Chambertin, Échezeaux, Clos de la Roche), the vineyards also cover emblematic terroirs of Chablis and Pouilly-Fuissé. The estate is distinguished by the richness of its climats, including Les Grèves, Les Bressandes, Les Teurons, and the legendary Montrachet. More than 85% of the vines are classified as Premier Cru or Grand Cru, an exceptional level of classification in Burgundy.

Iconic grape varieties

Pinot Noir (approximately 50 hectares) – Chardonnay (approximately 10 hectares)

Philosophy and History

Founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor to the Duke of Burgundy, and his wife Guigone de Salins, the Hôtel-Dieu in Beaune was established to care for the poor and sick. Very quickly, donations of vineyards poured in, building over the centuries into an exceptional wine estate. Each vintage pays tribute to a benefactor, perpetuating this spirit of generosity and legacy. The first wine auction dates back to 1859 and is now the most famous charity wine auction in the world. The funds raised support the Beaune public hospital and various social and medical projects.

The Domaine is thus unique in its kind: it embodies the rare alliance of a centuries-old hospital heritage, a humanitarian commitment and high-precision viticulture.

Production specifics

Since 2015, the estate has been managed by Ludivine Griveau, the first female estate manager in nearly six centuries of history. She has undertaken an ambitious project to convert the vineyard to organic farming, officially certified in 2024. The harvest is exclusively manual, carried out with the help of experienced pickers, to guarantee the integrity of the grapes.

Vinification takes place in a modern winery, with rigorous monitoring of each individual plot. Aging occurs in carefully selected oak barrels, giving the wines finesse, structure, and aging potential. The minimalist approach in the cellar prioritizes the expression of the terroir and the freshness of the fruit, while respecting the unique character of each vineyard site. The 50 cuvées are divided into 33 reds and 17 whites, offering a diverse and representative range of Burgundy in its noblest diversity.

Recognitions

The wines of the Hospices de Beaune are highly sought after by collectors, enthusiasts, and professionals worldwide. Their quality has improved considerably over the past few decades, thanks in particular to the work of renowned winemakers and collaborations with the biggest names in Burgundy. The annual auction, conducted by Sotheby's, attracts international media attention and remains a highlight of the global wine calendar.

The Hospices wines, sold in barrels and then aged by partner houses, now reflect the elite of Burgundy's vineyards. Some, like Mazis-Chambertin Cuvée Madeleine Collignon or Meursault Cuvée Loppin, have become iconic.
