Wine and cheese pairings: the art of marriage

A cheese platter is a staple of French meals, often accompanied by a good glass of wine. However, finding the perfect wine and cheese pairing is a delicate art, as each type of cheese requires a specific aromatic profile. Les Vins de Carole offers a collection of carefully selected wines to enhance every type of cheese, from the mildest to the most robust.

White wines: often underestimated allies

Contrary to popular belief, white wines are often better suited than reds to accompany cheese. Their freshness, acidity, and finesse pair perfectly with goat cheeses such as Crottin de Chavignol , Selles-sur-Cher , or Valençay . A Sancerre or a Pouilly-Fumé also go wonderfully with them.

Blue cheeses (Roquefort, Bleu d'Auvergne) pair wonderfully with sweet white wines such as Sauternes , a semi-sweet Jurançon , or a late-harvest Gewurztraminer . Their sweetness balances the salty and powerful character of the cheese.

Red wines: structure and typicity

Pressed or washed-rind cheeses like Comté , Morbier , or Munster pair well with supple, low-tannin red wines . A Pinot Noir from Burgundy or a Gamay from Beaujolais are harmonious choices. Hard, mature cheeses like Salers or Cantal can stand up to a more structured red such as a Cahors or a Saint-Joseph. For strong cheeses, avoid overly tannic reds. Opt for mature wines with mellow tannins to avoid overwhelming the palate.

Sparkling and rosé wines: freshness and balance

Champagnes and Crémants are excellent companions for a varied cheese board. A brut Champagne pairs well with soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert . Their acidity and finesse contrast pleasantly with the creamy texture.

Rosé wines, especially those from Provence , can be paired with fresh cheeses, pressed cheeses, or those served in summer. They bring a welcome touch of freshness and fruitiness.

Service tips

Serve white wines between 8 and 10°C, red wines between 14 and 16°C, and sparkling wines between 6 and 8°C. Remove cheeses from the refrigerator 30 minutes before serving so they reach room temperature. Vary the wine styles if you are offering a diverse cheese board, or pair each cheese with its ideal wine according to its characteristics.
