Viognier: aromatic intensity and creaminess of a great white grape variety

Viognier is a rare and precious white grape variety, prized for its intense aromas of yellow fruit, its roundness on the palate, and its ability to produce wines of great sensuality. Originating in the Northern Rhône Valley, it is now cultivated in several regions of the world, while remaining the preserve of discerning wine lovers seeking rich, complex, and elegant white wines.

Origins and emblematic terroirs

Viognier nearly disappeared in the 1960s before being revived by the winemakers of Condrieu , its historical birthplace on the right bank of the Rhône. It is the only grape variety permitted in this prestigious appellation, as well as in Château-Grillet . Its growing success has led to its development in Languedoc , Roussillon , Provence , and also internationally (California, Australia, South Africa, etc.).

Aromatic profile and winemaking styles

Viognier immediately captivates with its unique aromatic profile: ripe apricot, yellow peach, orange blossom, acacia, honey, and even hints of exotic fruits and sweet spices. Its texture is generally ample, with a silky mouthfeel and low acidity, which distinguishes it from many other white wines. It can be vinified in tanks to preserve its fruitiness, or aged in barrels to add complexity and depth. It produces dry wines, but also sometimes sweet or dessert wines in certain expressions...

Food and wine pairings with Viognier

Thanks to its richness and captivating aromas, Viognier pairs perfectly with exotic dishes (prawn curry, lamb tagine with apricots), mild Asian cuisine, white meats, poultry in cream sauce, fish en papillote, and soft cheeses. It can also be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif to fully appreciate its expressive bouquet.

Our selection of Viognier

Les Vins de Carole offers a refined selection of Viognier wines, combining freshness, density, and aromatic expression. Whether it's a racy Condrieu, a luscious Languedoc Viognier, or a charming Mediterranean white, our range showcases this exceptional grape variety, perfect for lovers of intense and captivating white wines.
