Gevrey-Chambertin: the controlled power of great red Burgundy wines

The Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, located north of the Côte de Nuits, embodies the grandeur of Burgundy's vineyards. The first village in the Côte de Nuits to be granted an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) in 1936, Gevrey-Chambertin is most famous for producing some of Burgundy's greatest red wines. Made exclusively from Pinot Noir , these wines are distinguished by their complexity, density, and remarkable aging potential.

A prestigious and unique terroir

The vineyard covers approximately 400 hectares, of which nearly 80 hectares are classified as Premier Cru and 90 hectares as Grand Cru. The diversity of the soils—primarily composed of hard limestone, marl, and clay—provides a rich and nuanced environment for Pinot Noir to express itself. The vines' ideal exposure on the east-southeast-facing slopes allows for perfect grape ripeness in a semi-continental climate that fosters the temperature variations necessary for the development of aromas.

Gevrey-Chambertin and its exceptional climates

The appellation boasts nine prestigious Grands Crus, the most famous of which are Chambertin and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze , two historic vineyards renowned since the Middle Ages. These vineyards, with their poor, well-drained soils, produce wines of unparalleled depth and intensity. The Premiers Crus, such as Les Cazetiers, Lavaux Saint-Jacques, and Clos Saint-Jacques, often rival the Grands Crus in terms of finesse and aging potential.

The characteristics of Gevrey-Chambertin wines

On tasting, Gevrey-Chambertin red wines reveal themselves in an intense ruby to garnet color. The nose is often deep and complex, blending notes of black fruit (blackberry, blackcurrant), black cherry, licorice, and sweet spices, evolving over time towards tertiary aromas of leather, undergrowth, and even truffle. On the palate, the structure is dense, with present but integrated tannins, balanced acidity, and a long, persistent finish. These are distinguished, powerful, yet always elegant wines.

Gourmet food and wine pairings

Gevrey-Chambertin wines are ideal companions for refined and characterful cuisine. They pair beautifully with grilled beef, aged rib-eye steak , roast duck , game in sauce , or mature cheeses such as Époisses or aged Comté. Their richness and structure also allow them to enhance more elaborate dishes, such as venison fillet with Grand Veneur sauce or a pan-fried medley of wild mushrooms .
